Here is a thread to talk about something quite common in anime and manga : the fighting tournament arc. We saw it a LOT, in a fighting shonen it is almost prerequesite.

What do you think about those arcs ? Is it boring now ? What do you like in them ? their trope and their innovations ?

What is your favorite tournament arc in anime ?

Gotta go Cell tournament and Chunnin Exams tbh, Chunnin exams cause it grew tha world and was basically what Saboady was for One piece. We saw what tha other Shinobi in Naritos generation was like and how they stacked up. Plus Tha fact that it had multiple parts(written test, Survival game and then 1v1’s) made it more immersive to me

And tha Cell games, simply cause it had Cell and Gohan lol. Not to mention, Cell really challenged tha entire planet to throw hands and stood out there for like a week iirc

You should've included Kengan Ashura's annihilation tournament. Don't really care for anything on the list. In OPM, it's arguably one of the least interesting parts of the show.
I have not followed OPM since Season 1 of the anime and the Saitama vs Tatsuki fight in the online comic but how does a tournament even occur in a setting like OPM? Lol. It is not something I would have expected.

I’m really glad you made this thread lmfao. My favorite tournament arc I’ve seen in Manga was the tournament Arc in Berserk.

“Lee, Berserk doesn’t have a tournament arc” most of you may say, and to that I say, you’re wrong. At the end of the Golden Age Arc, at the end of Guts’ post-war timeskip, we actually do get a mini tournament “arc” that takes up about 30% of an actual chapter, and the “arc” is a hardcore parody of real tournament arcs.

Most tournament arcs involve the protagonist competing right from the initial rounds to build excitement, but in this tournament, Guts shows up right at the very end and apparently spanked one of the two finalists off-panel. Then he asks the tournament heads to let him fight the other finalist and the heads say it’s fine because who cares. Then Guts does this to the other guy:

The whole thing is pretty much the opposite of a typical tournament arc, and the whole thing is played for gags lol. Normal tournament arcs take time to build hype and suspense, but Berserk is like “fuck this bullshit, these arcs are dumb” lol

But okay anyway. As for “normal” tournament arcs, I guess I would say my favorite is probably the UA Sports Fest. It’s probably overall the most solid tournament arc I’ve read.

Like for every trope in shonen OPM explored the tournament arc. Half comedy half real fights. The tournament have Saitama trying to learn martial arts but ultimately seeing it is bullshit and he is too strong and don't need fancy movements ^^

Saitama joins in hopes to find a worthy opponent (doesn't happen), there is some decent character development from Suiryu and two other minor heroes, but otherwise it's lackluster and feels like a filler. I mean, fuck, in the middle of the setup for the biggest saga to date, let's throw in a mini tournament arc, like for real ? lmfao

I didn't feel it was bad, I even kinda liked it in the manga (in the anime it was poorly done). Suiryu character was a nice one.

If we include the whole Chuunin exams? That tops it. It was a fantastic arc.

The YYH tournament was good too. Cell games were pretty bad tbh. Cell as an antagonist is fundamentally dumb. The fights were one sided. It was meh.

MHA sucked too.

But you can't deny it feels like filler. It should've happened another time, at least. Nothing really of note happened besides Suiryu and the two A class heroes getting their quick shine.

I liked the scene where Suiryu was calling out for a hero even though he was shitting on them before. Then Saitama comes and oneshots the Dragon lvl Monster lol.

Lol I could make a tennis thread that the guy would talk about Berserk

Why it is your fav ?

Because Deku didn't win ?
