Oda has no problem having characters acting out of character as long as the desired end result is obtained which is no good writing to me.

Togashi is a better writer than Oda.

Not saying Izo isn't an asshole but people thinking he was a patriot is weird too, dude was treated like garbage by Wano and mostly cared about Oden and the scabbards, you can hate him for not pulling a payback war to avenge them but not for ditching Wano.

Izo and the scabbards significantly changed throughout Oden's flashback though,they went from outcasts of Wano to the most respected samurai of Wano, Izo obviously became a patriot along the line as he was not willing to let Oden flee with the wb pirates,reminding Oden he was supposed to take the leadership of Wano as shogun one day.
