If Shanks hadn't stopped Kaido two years ago, the guy would have arrived at Marineford killing everyone, Admiral, Gorosei, whatever you put in front of him, he destroys.

Yes, indeed. It aligns with the fact that Sengoku himself wasn't sure whether they, with all of their forces combined, could stop Whitebeard (until Whitebeard's severe and rapid decline in health gave them the upper hand). It also explains why Shanks was able to stop the war and dictate terms, with Sengoku apologizing and saying that he will take blame. Gorosei being afraid of angering Kaido, admitting they could not stop an angry Shanks, Doflamingo being more afraid of Kaido than of the WG. There is a clear pattern that leaves no room for interpretation.
