Character Discussion Shanks is the most brutal yonko

#1
Shanks is more brutal than Kaido or BM. He has now on two occasions been shown attempting to kill crews who had already surrendered or were escaping.

BM and Kaido on the other hand often try to recruit those who challenge them. Shanks offers his challengers no such proposition. He doesn’t take slaves or captives. He just destroys his enemies.

In a way he reminds me of a more mature version of Captain Kid, who similarly takes pleasure in destroying his enemies, even if they beg for mercy. The obvious difference however, being that while Kid can be erratic and kills others for simply laughing at his dreams, Shanks only destroys those who hurt his friends.

Before I say anything, one question.

Are you looking for engagement bait or are you really this dumb?

He's actually the smartest Yonko so far. Instead of imprisoning his enemies in a book (weakly guarded btw) or in a fkng training camp (Udon), he destroys them right away. I guess that having fewer numbers and weaker allies made him more pragmatic when dealing with enemies.

Well, there was Whitebeard who managed to recruit a lot of his former enemies (either as allies or into his main crew), but that did turn against him too (e.g.: Squard). Taking every lowlife under your wing might be prejudicial in the end.

So what was established in chapter 1 when he gave no mind to people bullying him but actually butchered the same pirates who took Luffy.

Also how he dealt with Kidd and Barto was right. Kidd would have erased a ton of his large crew so he was asking for it. Barto was more of a joke but actually Yasopp decided he had to pay something for his foolish act and that was it. Given how Barto was almost laughing at it while running away that was actually a lesson otherwise he could have tried to do that again with far worse consequences (be it Shanks again or BB if he had the guts).

I don’t think brutal is the correct word to describe Shanks. Putting your defeated foes in slave labour camps indefinitely and torturing them to break their spirits is more what I would call brutal, and that’s Kaido. Chopping off loved ones heads and sending them as a present is brutal.

Ruthless is what I would describe Shanks as. He has a line not to cross and when it is crossed he does not mess around. (Having said that, I think Barty is fine and Shanks is just teaching him a lesson here).

Barto is probably fine

But I do think Yasopp intended to kill them

"Women, children, I'll use them all!! Everyone here is a slave!!"
Would Shanks do this?
And would he also make women of Wano work as hookers and shit? I doubt it.

Yeah obviously not. He’s more brutal, but he also has a moral compass. He’s the “honorable gangster” trope

Barto is fine, Shanks didn’t intend to do anything to him.

I’m sure there’s more to what happened than we saw, as it wouldn’t make sense for Yasopp to go against Shanks’ wishes and kill Barto.
Shanks was just trolling Bartolomeo by making it seem like he could escape

He said multiple times that his reputation would go down if he let Barto’s actions slide.

Nothing suggests Shanks intentionally wants Barto to live. Obviously Barto will live due to plot, but Yasopp destroyed his ship on open water.

He's like a yakuza.

Theory - Shanks is the head of the underworld | Worstgen

My theory seems more and more right every time Shanks shows up and his subordinate crews are joking about protection money or he's killing people who already surrendered or doing some other shady shit.

If that were the case he wouldn’t have been shocked when Yasopp told him to move nor would he have been happy Luffy has such good subordinates literally “How could I not smile”

Bartos obviously going to survive, likely because the RHP are going to fish them out of the water after this
