I don't know enough about evolution to have a concrete opinion on that.
I'm sure natural selection is a little more complicated than just "the evolved one survives", there must be a few more parameters that I don't know about like the octracization of individuals etc. I don't know, maybe it's an error.

There has to be competition and struggle to survive
Out of this need we get random mutations and adaptation.
Some traits would have reproductive advantages whereas other traits won't have such advantage.
The advantageous traits should be hereditary that is such traits are inherited
And, more children should born with such traits than can survive the competition, and there has to be variation amongst the children born- children with more desirable characteristics should survive and produce more offspring

I am not an expert on the history of science, but I think that if people in the past based their worldviews on the level of science at the time, many would have had a mistaken worldview, so the track record for basing your worldview off of that isn't good, that's why I think it is good to study evolution, but not good to center it as a core of your worldview,
