PG’s Thoughts: Goku was an uphill battle for Luffy’s character, BUT This one is interesting, Naruto is actually quite the controversial character. He has a lot of highs obviously but there are some valid criticisms……a lot of people have criticized his obsession with Sasuke and saving him that got worse as the series went on, His Talk no jutsu antics, destiny ish things, questionable powerups etc. But Naruto also has heart, has a lot of iconic moments/ inspirational moments /speeches as well.Very relatable character in Part 1 of the series. Unbelievably Sad backstory, one of the loneliest Protagonist as well, people have its implied Naruto’s Clones were a way for him to cope with the Loneliness.
Now Luffy, We know about Luffy and His highs , his fearlessness , his boldness, straightforwardness are his strengths. The Unique fighting style is great too an extent……but he has lows, his usage of his powers and abilities are very controversial to say the least, concept of his abilities, Luffys handling of situations and obliviousness can get frustrating at times when we know what Luffys capable of. You sometimes wish Luffy had a bit more edge at times. (Pre Timeskip he had more of an edge imo) Overall Naruto feels more complex of character overall , you feel the character change overtime while Luffy feels stagnant sometimes but he shows glimpses of change every now and then ,In the end I’ll say this complexity can be a gift and a curse. But I’m curious what’s are your thoughts? how does Monkey . D Luffy compare to Naruto Uzumaki?

Naruto

The dude who saw every battle as an opportunity to give villains a free of cost therapy.

He spend all his life seeking approval and validation from the village who threw rocks at him and being a Sasuke fanboy who didn't give a dime about him.

He cried all his life about being an orphan and then became most absent dad himself.

He's a walking contradiction
He's simply insufferable as a protagonist

Feel like people here are still grossly misunderstanding this moment
How could they fight for their agenda otherwise.

Idk why people whine about Naruto so much, at least he felt like a growing character. Luffy’s barely a character, he’s just a plot device.
Naruto spent an entire fight with Neji saying that you make your destiny and then he was the child of the prophecy and god and walking plot device.
Luffy literally is punch guy true and throughout

I like them both quite a bit. I'm going to give it to Naruto here. Complexity can be a blessing and a curse, but(with the exception of the final arc) he hits more than he misses, and I think its better to try and fail than to not try. Luffy is, by and large, simple and fun and that's great and it fits the tone of One Piece well, but I appreciate Naruto's growth more.
