Character Discussion Would Prime Garp find himself in this situation against 72 year old, stage 4 cancer patient Whitebeard off life support?

It would be a net gain for WB if you replaced Akainu with Prime Garp. Especially because WB wasn't able to defend all too well. Akainu took off half WB's head immediately after getting rocked in the back of the head. Garp doesn't have the lethality to retaliate in such a manner.

And we know Garp isn't Oden, but it's worth noting Oden got KOd by a base Kaidou regular clubshot from behind. There is no way Garp is walking away scott free getting cheapshot from behind like that by enraged WB. I just don't see any way WB doesn't benefit with Akainu being replaced by Garp.

If WB could truck through literally getting his brain eviscerated, he'll be fine taking a non lethal punch from Garp, it sure as shit ain't stopping him in that moment if even going headless didn't.

I hope you're not implying Oden is > Garp.

WB's performance in Marineford is, still to this day, the greatest ever shown in the manga. He wasn't "only" an old man with cancer, he was also stabbed in the chest before even starting to fight. Even then, he still folded Akainu and AFTER THAT he beat Blackbeard, who only finished him with the help of his crew. That was monstrous and no character has shown anything close to it so far (maybe only Kaido in Onigashima is up there, but he was younger and faced lesser opponents IMO).

The series clearly portrays Whitebeard (and Kaido, to some extent) as a durability freak. In an 1v1, I think that Garp could win, but in a long, drawn-out battle like the Marineford War, WB has the advantage. I think we could compare WB to someone like George Foreman, he had an insane chin, a lot of heart and an incredibly powerful punch, even at an old age. But when he fights a genius like Muhammad Ali, he might be overwhelmed (it's worth remembering that Ali also aged worse, he was already showing signs of dementia pugilistica in his late 30's, while Foreman managed to be a World Champion at 45 years old... so, not all people age the same).

Edit: I'm seeing now that it's Prime Garp you mentioned... he would beat old WB without a doubt.

Prime Garp would maul Oldbeard.
We saw what old man garp did on beehive
In this flashback we seen garp tank roger sword haki attack easy and now tanks BM attacks like nothing .
The man is a fucking monster but this was something that was said for years .
Old WB would get beat so fast by prime garp he would not even have chance to get a heart attack .

Ridiculous. Axe hand Morgan did the same to garp as squard did to white beard.

Depends on how you look at it honestly. An old Garp who complained about losing strength could obliterate a town from distance with a shockwave. After Garp eats the first Gura punch to the head, a Galaxy Impact would send Whitebeard's body into oblivion. Taking off a chunk of Whitebeard's head is something Garp wouldn't replicate, but doing so put Akainu into a position of taking a second blow to the ribs.

Now we can argue of course if Akainu only taking off part of Whitebeard's head and not the entirety of it was plot or inaccuracy due to the effects of an earthquake straight to the head.

I feel like it had to be the latter, it's pretty clear Akainu was just doing whatever he believed would get Whitebeard off him immediately and the random quake fist to his body out of nowhere definitely messed his accuracy up. It was an attack done out of pure desperation and instinct

Honestly, Oda wrote himself into a corner with Akainu's DF, because with his DF, one punch to the face is instant death. With how common punches to the face are, Oda will have to avoid Akainu landing even one successful blow.

Just imagine Akainu in Kuzan's shoes against Garp; Kuzan landed his punch right into Garp's face. How how will this play out with a magma punch?

Even the dude who has a direct counter to his fruit (well not really a counter if the abilities are equal but you know what I mean) still had a leg taken and got multiple scars from him.
If he fights Luffy then it's likely going to be him just grazing Luffy each time or Luffy having to block/dodge all of his attacks, which is fine but it does suck that Akainu can never land a real hit on someone that Oda doesn't already intend to die or be crippled.
Although if he fights Dragon, depending on Dragon's abilities, that could be better.
