Time to come up with a theory that's spooking in my mind for a while now. Because of the pirate setting we all assumed that the story of One Piece is taking place some hundred years in the past, right? But what if we're totally wrong and everything is happening far in our future?
Let me explain this further: There was a new world war going on back in our timeline, this time with nations having used nuclear weapons it ended in an absolute desaster for humanity. However, the world somehow found a way to recover although every evidence of our high-developed civilzation has been taken care of on purpose to establish the world government.
Think about Egghead and the technology from the past that is shown there, robots from the past, vending machines, holograms and everything, could be stuff that existed in our world or maybe in our near future. Egghead being called the "future island" may have actually shown lots of stuff from the old world.
Then there is the legend of the All Blue and I'm asking myself, even if there are still some unexplored places in the New World left where should there be a whole ocean hidden? Almost impossible if you ask me. Then take a look at the map of our world and you see that all oceans are connected and not divided, so technically you could call it All Blue!
What seems like a big flaw in my theory is how the world map in One Piece looks like now, looking too different and too unnatural compared to our world map.
However, some places like the Rivers mountain look very artificial and the Grand Line with the Calm Belt as the four clearly separated Blues look like something that was planned on purpose to avoid the world to unite against the world government. As Imu seems to own a very powerful devil fruit it may be something like the Creation fruit which probably allowed Imu to recreate the world map to their liking. What would fit here is that Luffy's dream might be to (re)unite all of the Blues with each other.
So, what could the One Piece be in my theory then?
We've seen the reactions of Roger and his crew to it, everyone laughed and it sounded very much like they heard a funny story.
I probably shouldn't take hints from the anime but there it also looked like as if light has been emitted from somewhere close in front of them.
Light that could have been emitted from a big TV screen.
That is because the One Piece is actually - plain and simple - a TV! Joyboy produced a (funny and probably comedy or cartoon) movie that was showing the events of the void century. For all that we know about the Nika fruit and Joyboy by now I'd say a cartoon would be a very fitting thing for him to tell his story imo.
