Roger never defeated any prime Yonko in battle. Stalemated Primebeard, Gram Polo Jr and rookie Oden with 3 prime top tiers in his crew, sneaked around to avoid fighting Prime BM and Streusen inside her turf

Best he did was prob beat young rookie Kaido who often let himself be captured by Marines for free food and if parallels are any indication, he prob pulled up with his entire crew to gang up on a young rookie like Red Hair Pirates did in MF

Well if the requirement to become PK is to reach laugh tale ( as a final route to explore ) then the challenge is to find all the ponegyphs, now as long as you can do that you can reach laugh tale and become PK, so yeah strength is not strictly necessary unless those poneglyphs are owned by other strong dudes and u have to defeat them to get them....on that front Roger obviously had it a lot easier than luffy

But I still can't let go of the hype he used to have especially pre-TS.

For me, he and Prime WB were basically still "first among equals" a shade superior to the other top pirates of their era.

You'd think the pirate king would defeat somebody well-known or strong like even mid-tier famous pirates like Captain John or Ganzui or even Chinjao

Instead his biggest W was Squardo pirates and the most famous stories out on sea are about almost getting caught by "hero" Garp

Xebec instead got everything Roger couldve had strength-wise

Tbh I think that's more of a writing flaw of Oda, he's good at hyping but not good at follow up.

Half the titles are like that, we got World's Strongest X and Y but the titles themselves have barely any weight because we have no idea how they were earned.

And yeah he fucked over Roger, Xebec looked way more stylish. That can't be denied.

But there was once a time, I feel, when Roger could have been as hyped as Xebec...I guess now that Oda has Joyboy as his new toy he doesn't care about Roger anymore.

Anyways I do feel that Roger, Garp etc aren't far above Yonko. For me personally there is a gap but it's negligible.

It was already confirmed before that any yonko could become the PK if they fulfilled the right conditions and solved the mystery, outside of the power. This chapter confirms once more the same thing

Of course, there is a minimum strength requirement for yourself or your subordinates (Buggy) to become PK based on the number of people actively getting in your way. But unlike Luffy who has room temp IQ and thinks he needs to beat everybody to be the PK, Roger was smart for a pirate + had VOAT so he did things without hurting anybody severely

Being stronger than yonkos + knowing the secrets of the world grants you the title of King of the World, which is what Xebec sought

Whitebeard like the other top of the top never wanted the PK title. He was never chasing Roger’s shadow and was the strongest on the seas after Roger died.
