Its trash, glazing Luffy is not character development, this has been What brain dead one piece fans have been saying since Wano, "oh look Nami defended luffys dream she really has grown as a character" "Aww Zoro called Luffy his best friend wow he's showing emotion" "wow Robin just called Sanji and Zoro Luffys wings"

I liked Usopp because he wasn't a brain dead supporter of Godfy now its all ruined cause Oda is a bum

Speech from both Gaban and Usopp didn't make sense.

If I have to blunt then their narrative weight is quite low.

During Enies, Usopp speech became iconic because of the build up we had - Luffy vs Usopp, Usopp leaving the crew, Robin in danger, Usopp trying to help but hiding his identity, iconic burning of the WG flag and going against WG...Luffy going down and the pep talk from Sogeking clicked because it reflected on the underlying nakama theme no matter what between two characters who parted ways due to the difference in the perspectives.

This time Gaban speech was about mocking Luffy G5 for being careless and goofy. Not being strong enough to be at Elbaph. It came across as strict tutor lecturing a student.

Usopp speech had no build up either. Both these speeches served not much of a purpose when it comes to story, apart from wasting panel time and dragging this fight.

If I have to make a guess then these two speeches were put in for some different reasons.

Oda was getting criticized by fans for G5 being goofy and laughing all the time.

Oda has put fans perspective via Gaban.

And, then he has put his own perspective via Usopp to shut down fans perspective regarding G5.
I think with Gaban tbf to him, unlike us and the SHs he's not really seen Luffy's journey and the insane amount of plot armor this mofo has lol and is just going off what he knows, which is, Shanks gassing up this kid potentially as the man they've been waiting for that has also awakened as the legendary Nika, the so called "savior" of the world and the only one that can actually challenge the status quo being Imu specifically. Also being a Roger pirate and someone that has conquered the grandline, he knows the true history of the world and also knows what is required to actually challenge the world. There's also probably a part of him that also wants to see the continuation of his Captain's dream. It's not like Gaban doesn't have ties to Elbaph, I mean he has a wife and kid on Elbaph and is bascially a citizen of Elbaph himself and even then he's thinking of the bigger picture. Right now he sees this so called "messiah" of the world that hasn't quite mature yet being actively gunned down and targeted by the King of the world, that only this so called messiah can defeat. So he's being logically here and saying run and fight another day even if I and all the others that have been waiting for you for so long are going to die here.

And Usopp is saying "we ain't gonna run regardless" which is fine.
But the whole fck your expectations and destiny spiel as well as the we won't allow you steal his freedom nonsense was forced and unnecessary. It's just all so dissapointing coz Oda's bascially insisting here that Luffy will continue being oblivious to his destiny and that he's just gonna keep scamming his way to the top thanks to said destiny previledges by the way.

There's nothing wrong with understanding who joyboy was, what it's really gonna take to be PK and also the kind of obstacles that are in the way of your so called dream of being the freest man on the sea. When you understand that you can now say, aight bet! shit is peak and I understand what came before me but gonna do things my way. That is called bloody character development but no Oda's hell bent on keeping Luffy oblivous to end, insisting that he isn't going to be swayed by destiny when destiny is quite literally doing so much heavy lifting for him:kaidowhat:

I think it differently.

From each individuals perspective, things do make sense.

Gaban witnessed Roger becoming the PK, the true history and how they were unable to overcome the final obstacles. He knows the what's at the stake and what everyone is facing. So, him giving that kind of speech from his perspective makes sense. He doesn't need to know Luffy's journey to understand the gravity of the situation.

Usopp is on a journey with Luffy. They grew up from nobody to a yonkou crew and knows each other well. His speech from his lens makes sense because he knows what freedom means to Luffy.

Luffy's reaction to Gaban makes sense as well. I mean he just defeated Kaido and became a yonkou. He doesn't know who's IMU, the true strength of WG, and the true history. On top of these, he's simple minded as well. Imagine becoming a yonkou - a step closer to becoming the PK and someone calls you shit and mocks you? Lol So, his frustration as a reaction to Gaban is natural. You can't expect from him to understand the gravity of what lies ahead when he hasn't experienced it unlike Gaban who did so by living it.

What doesn't make sense is the lack of build up for these speeches. Such speeches serves a monumental impact and should results into a pay off from narrative perspective.

Gaban speech didn't leave an impact (as of now atleast) because it got countered by Usopp speech, theme of which we are aware of very clearly.

So what was the point of having these two speeches back to back in the space of few chapters when Luffy ended up doing what he always do - hit stronger punch?

If you look it from Usopp's pov And reading the speech from Tcb ,I don't have a negative view of the speech itself, but I didn't like the visuals.

Oda wanted to highlight the trait of coward that Usopp has and stepping up against the left hand of the PK,but he went too far with the trembling. He had more bravado vs Lucci than here against an ally..

You cannot take him seriously with that fake beard . It is ridiculous. He should have him rip it off to show how serious he is about this.
