Realising thy own strength and not doubting it leads to power, which lines up with Mihawk telling Zoro to use his willpower to surpass his blade and him. And willpower is not haki, it is a thing that commands haki.

It was inconsistent
It was present in earlier attack but missing in next, this was not Zoros first time using it.
Luffy was using it first time so it was crude and clumsy.
Crude means unrefined, clumsy means lacking coordination. The fight was mostly off panel, but we saw Luffy's initial strike and it looked good so it's very obvious what Kaido meant.

If Zoro failed for a whole chapter to put it together against minimal resistance Kaido would have bonked him, too
