dirtyLarryI don't think he was that different to begin with. It's just that after such a long time everyone and their mother knows how he writes every single arc (in terms of plot blueprint). Couple that with an overload of different characters, his problems to handle such a big cast (this has always been a problem) and his tendencies to always implement unnecessary ideas and you get the messy arc endings as of late.
Buusatan94The problems were already here, but during these arcs these problems got worse and what made up for it before disappeared, also Oda is older, less creative and fame and riches have gotten to his head, and he's far less willing to listen to criticism and different opinions and his editors are now yes men who don't dare to question or criticize him.
Uncle VanPreskip One Piece focused on the SHs and had great build up to it's lore. Postskip shifted the focus to a ton of minor characters while giving no answers to the lore questions. There's also Oda's self admitted problem of adding new stuff on the fly. Did you know that in PH there were only 4 Scabbards? But decided to more than double them to 9 in DR?
LogikoThanks, you are giving me an idea for my next One Piece debunk
Johnny B. DecentNika was always going to happen, like it or not.
Buusatan94And it immediately was shit. At least some build up would have softened the blow.
Johnny B. DecentIt was build up as early as Fishman Island. People just don't like it because it isn't another cliche evil alternate persona power like seen in Naruto and Bleach.
Buusatan94This build up sucked, just like Nika itself.
Johnny B. DecentSo, you're just complaining for the sake of it then.
Uncle VanThere was no build up to Nika Luffy. The Gorosei didn't give 2 shits about Luffy all preskip and did the bare minimum knowing he had the Nika fruit. Even when they knew exactly where Luffy was going. It wasn't until Wano that they randomly started caring. Hell, they're very bipolar when it comes to capturing Robin.
Buusatan94Yeah you can't call some mention of the sun in FMI and then nothing until Onigashima build up. And retconning the Gomu Gomu no mi into some god mythical zoan with zero foreshadowing is still shit writing now as it was back then.
LogikoThere was build up for Nika. But not in the Gorosai. Overall, Nika doesn't change a lot of things for the Gorosai, it's just one more problem. We need to understand that oppressive systems tends to underestimate threats. That's why they didn't care about Luffy.
dirtyLarry@Johnny B. Decent It wasn't built up or foreshadowed at all. A mere mention of Joyboy at FI is no foreshadowing of Luffy having a completely different DF all of a sudden. The earliest there was any kind of hint towards Luffy being special was during the Onigashima raid itself, when Who's Who talked about the DF transport/Nika and the Gorosei were nervous about Luffy (which came totally out of the blue tbh).
BulletThe problems were already there
As the story has gone on and the cast got bigger the problems just kept piling up and getting more obvious. Also the story being repetitive and Oda's refusal to show character development makes the story more boring and makes us less forgiving of the problems.
Johnny B. DecentAll of a sudden? Fishman Island was like in 2010. Then came more thing about the Sun God at Big Mom's flashback. It's just the series has been going so damn long between arcs.
dirtyLarry@Logiko You cheeky little rascal. I love your trolling, but unfortunately I don't I time to read it now.
LogikoI'm serious lol. From an objective standpoint, it was masterfully planted and hinted and foreshadowed.
dirtyLarry@Johnny B. Decent During FI Joyboy was mentioned once. During WCI the Sun God was mentioned once. Both instances were so insignificant and had nothing to do with Luffy at all, that you simply can't call it "foreshadowing". Heck, nobody thought of Luffy being a God pre Onigashima even once.
