it's OK ... I'm just saying among all the things that are real problems for women in the world
they don't get too many top tiers in a fictional story is not wrong or a big deal

if you think not and everything should be like the way you enjoy ... well we all want to be selfish , and that's good in some points

thanks for a healthy argument :)

No, far from a real big problem - just a faraway mirror of a problem

Enforcing any limitation or priority based on gender is sexism whether its male or female. The 2 extremes are chivalry and misogyny. Oda is extremely chivalrous that some people take as misogynistic cause of his habits.
Natalija
Natalija
Yes. But I don't mind the chivalry really.
However - Boa fighting basically nothing as Shichibukai and Robin having done nothing since grabbing Franky's balls is beyond me - to name a few :D and this is just tip of the iceberg
Natalija

The balls thing is a bit of a joke, but you get my drift

I don't think there's anything wrong with having a specific character archetype in mind when creating characters, but I do think that many writers make the mistake of writing 'A FeMaLe ChArActEr tM' instead of just writing a character. Oda relies too much on gimmicks for his female characters, most of whom (looking at you Tsuru) are useless and could easily be cut from the story.

I don't fully buy into the rhetoric that 'muhh SJW' or whatever ruins stories. All art is political, from Shakespeare's Macbeth to Captain America: Civil War, to Attack On Titan where Marley is a very thinly veiled parody of Nazi Germany. Make art as political as you please, I don't give a damn, just give me complex characters I can root for lol.
Natalija
Natalija
@Den_Den_Mushi Yes! And I’m not even asking for all of them to be complex, but it’d be nice if he threw us a bone once :’)

Yeah. Oda's a sexist and I'd say most of his fanbase is probably sick of it. Look how people got hyped up when 2 random girls were apart of the Tobi Roppo lol. People want to cheer on the girls of the series and have them do things instead of just being eye candy.

Bold take: I don't think Rey being a shit character or the new trilogy sucking has much to do with Feminism or that shit and more to do with Disney being a soulless company that's only interested in milking the IP for as much money as possible. The 7th movie was essentially a remake of a New Hope with some minor changes (some that worked like Kylo, most that didn't).
TheAncientCenturion
TheAncientCenturion
And the 8th movie was a burning heap of garbage even if you give Rey a dick.

I agree, I think people are looking for a scapegoat and unfortunately Rey and feminism are convenient scapegoats. If a character is badly written, their gender is the least of their problems. It's like blaming Kirito's Gary Stu-ness on Incel culture. It ain't that deep pal, Kirito just sucks as a character and SAO is mindless pandering to the lowest common denominator.

@TheAncientCenturion Very true about the new OP girls. The guys welcome it too.
Yes, Disney is a soulless money grab, no doubt about it. Zero plot. But not even to be able to write decent characters is beyond me. The overpowered Rey isn’t the only problem. Finn her useless faithful dog and Poe the teenager are just as bad. No one can relate to these whatsoever. Ffs

I don't think Oda is a sexist on purpose. He's just heavily restricted as a writer as he sees women as delicate and weak. He doesnt want them to get into proper combat, because he doesnt want to draw them taking damage. And this has gotten worse and worse over the years. To the point that Nami has not even been hurt post timeskip.
Natalija
Natalija
Not on purpose. It’s in the culture.
Hahaha has she never been hurt???? Damn, I hadn’t even noticed.

Nami literally went to WCI and came out unscathed. And anytime she was captured by the enemy it came out looking ((sexual)).

So yes, Oda is a shitty writer when it comes to women. But then again he's a shitty writer in general now anyways. Post timeskip he puts characters in boxes and they cant get out of it.
Natalija
Natalija
Wow, must be nice to be a pirate and not get hurt :D
Sanji is his spirit animal basically, what can I say.
Chrono
Chrono
Example: Since Sanji is a cook, he cant get as much combat focus as he used to pre timeskip.

Since Zoro is a badass swordsman, he cant have his character developed more than being....."badass".

Since Luffy is the strongest, he has to be obssesed with getting stronger and defeating anything in sight.

Since women are beautiful, they are too fragile to get into fights

Post timeskip has a big lack of creativity.
