If it works like explosion then he still felt the blast to some extent but blocked main energy source . If not then yes he blocked it completely.

Vista has equal or better sword skill as per canon.

Because I studied Norse and Greek mythology so I liked the connection . Also his introduction panel was epic . These 2 reasons , everything after that was huge bonus.
