He's scum and needs to be beaten up by the Straw Hats whether he turns on the Gorosei or not, so he may as well stay a loyal dog and go down a proper villain instead of rebelling as if he was never a huge part of the problem himself.

Let's start with the obvious: Zoro has right-hand man portrayal, Sanji does not. Trying to shift Zoro's obvious parallels from one character to another that doesn't fit him doesn't make Sanji take Zoro's parallels just because "he's next in line"...
What's Rayleigh's religious theme? I can understand Zoro with all the buddhist themes in his moveset even if he's an atheist.

Those expectations will set you up for disappointment. The Ace novel got all that precisely because of its life period of the character it followed.
Well, I guess what we could get is a proper statement of Mihawk being stronger than Shanks (for doubters). But anything beyond that, on a novel...
The novel isn't set on a time period where we can learn new things about the worldbuilding, Zoro's powers, or his lore (Zoro himself doesn't even know about his ancestry even now), so what it has going for it is "Zoro" and potentially "a good script". If it has the later then that's good enough...
I don't see it.
1- There's no time for this when the final saga is gaining momentum, going to Sphinx Island now would be a terrible way to throw it into the sea.
2- There's nothing interesting there other than the tombs, and Luffy has already made peace with Ace's death.
