Ryo lets you create a space between attacks so if you pair it with conquerors coating you don't need to physically touch the other character.
It's good if you're fighting someone like Akainu with his magma, Magellan with his poison. It's also good if you're fighting another conquerors coating...

I think Luffy should get awakening in order to beat Kaido. If we assume Kaido also has awakening, then I don't see Luffy beating Kaido without himself having awakening.
