We've already been told in advance he actually is just a tsundere with a good heart, and he lost to Shanks. He won't be the big bad even if he becomes a temporary antagonist.
There is a chance he'll even become the princess of the arc.
Mihawk fandom knows what "being the strongest something" means, so we aren't bothered at all by the existence of this character, Shanks or anyone else.
This guy so far looks like I'll like him a lot.

Pell is another great example of how it doesn't matter how onscreen a death is for Oda to later change his mind. It clearly happened, he had a "death scene" that culminated in an explosion.
