Majority of time I've seen this was just people saying why they don't get too invested in the fights instead of an excuse.
But of course, that's ignoring the shitty "huh dur, go watch Dragon Ball if you only want fights" cope.
It's not like we never get good fights, but choreography is always too basic or Oda straight up goes on and sabotages himself like how great Luffy vs Kaido was going with the back and forth until Oda went full cartoon network style with G5.
Agreed. Everything is important, including the fights. It’s all about balance, so when the time comes for a fight and it just ends up disappointing, that affects the overall enjoyment of the story.
No one can pretend that they were reading the build up to the raid and were expecting the Strawhat alliance to go and have a picnic on Onigashima.
They were going to fight, so give us a proper fight!
I admit G5 Luffy vs Kaido is looking fairly spectacular but it's undeniably a Tune fight
Zoro vs King looked substantially superlative from the spectacular side just like G5 Luffy vs Kaido achieved thus far and was fueled with pathos, but didn't feature the Tune component.
I understand when the battle happens between 2 extremely powerful characters one can get particularly excited but all components should be looked.

Personally I actually love the toon shit. Luffy's final power being revealed to be a gag powerup was a pretty great choice imo, even if the type change with the fruit was kinda dumb.
Zoro vs King on the other hand was just ok for me. Not great not terrible.
One of the issues with Oda is that he rarely ever cares about style chemistry when writing his fights; it's essential for two combatants to at least have some type of similarity in their styles so they can have visually satisfying choreography. Go and reread the Sanji vs Mr.2 fight and tell me Oda can't draw CQC, but when Oda designs all these bizarre abilities then finding the right concept for their fights becomes a far more difficult task and often Oda just resorts to the easiest or most cartoonish answer. If Oda actually cared about fights in one piece I am guaranteeing you that he would create much more simplistic fighting styles that could blend together and create something not completely ridiculous, but then it wouldn't really be one piece so you have to just accept it and appreciate the good when it appears.

I don't mind the Toon stuff much, it's good in its own way; I would have preferred it to happen later on around the story finale perhaps against Im sama however
It would have been nice if the legendary Nika Godly power once belonging to the former Joy Boy was unleashed against Im perhaps the entity that once killed the former Joy Boy
People need to stop pretending that OP isn't a battle manga just to defend Oda's poor handling of the fights. Fights are the climax of every arc, so yeah, it makes a major impact when Oda fucks them up.
And imo Oda has really fucked them up in the past 2 arcs.

There was absolutely no reason for Sanji to not get a fight in WCI. The Cake plot was fucking stupid and boring. This isn't a cooking manga, nobody reads OP to watch sanji cook a fucking cake. A big reason why characters like Sanji are so popular, in comparison to a character like Chopper or Brook, is because Sanji is strong and a fighter.
Sanji didn't get any major victories in punk hazard or dressrosa. He got his leg cracked by vergo and then almost defeated by Doffy. Most sanji fans wanted him to get some sort of climactic battle, not fucking food network.
Literally no other battle shonen would pull some crap like this.

Oda utterly ruined both the supernova and the yonko in wano. Linlin was a major antagonist with years of build up, and Oda treated her like fucking trash.
Literally off screen 90% of the fight and only show a couple of scenes where Kid and Law use big attacks. Literally re-draw the same panel over and over(linlin laughing in front of kid and Law) every time he wants to show the readers what's happening between other major events.
Oda also admittedly had no idea how Luffy would beat kaido. He had to literally pull all these power ups out of his ass.
