Character Discussion 3 Things that would Elevate Zoro’s Character

Naruto does not have depth? It has more depth than OP imo.

Again, having your genocidal warmongering evil bad guy change their mind after talking to a 15 year old they never met before automatically disqualifies Naruto from having any moral complexity.
One Piece is around the same level but never tries to talk about complex morals. The bad guys are just bad guys for good/bad reasons.
Naruto tries and fails, One Piece doesn't try to go the moral way, it's more shonen level fight the bad guys because they want to control the town/the island/the world.

Oda uses the big & tough guy trope pretty well with him. Think about movie characters portrayed by Bruce Lee, Clint Eastwood, Charles Bronson, Vin Diesel, Jason Statham and many others.

But Oda also gives him extra flavor with attributes of sacrifice, endurance, tenacity, high spirit of self-improvement, loyalty, kindness, friendship... Is highly possible that you don't like what these values represent (even in real life) so is understandable that you don't like this character.

Just choose another character and don't suffer in public.

What One Piece lacks is really scary villains who introduce an atmosphere of terror and hopelessness and that even the protagonists and other hardened individuals fear.

Pre-neutering Orochimaru was terrifying both in-universe with Sasuke once being paralyzed with fear because of him and pretty much everyone fearing him, and his introduction scene and other early moments were nightmare-inducing. I was afraid of him when I first watched him.

A villain in One Piece as terrifying, able to scare the fearless Luffy and Zoro, would have been so cool and refreshing to see. It's also one of the reasons why Movie 6 is my favorite OP movie because the villain is truly horrifying.

Agreed. There is a reason why akatsuki is considered one of the best villain groups of all time.

I do not understand how popularity is relevant for how good a character is.
Naruto was massively more popular than One Piece while having 0 depth.
Harry Potter is the most popular fantasy book and it's entry level fantasy with 0 moral complexity.

I think his point is even though there are better characters written, Zoro is still at the top when it comes to popularity. So he'll even become more popular if his character is elevated in writing.

Zoro, with him being as irrelevant and butchered as a character as he is in post timeskip, is still only barely trailing behind Luffy - who the author has been increasingly shoving down on us as the chosen one and hogs all the spotlight post timeskip.
I find it interesting to say the least.

Naruto and one piece are comparable in quality IMO.
Both were peak until a certain point for me - Naruto until pain arc, One piece until Dresrossa arc. But both have since then massively fell off. Both even opted to go with the MC being chosen one by destiny, even though initially they were about hard work and grit (Naruto not being that talented and making up with hard work, Luffy originally having a "mid" DF that he made powerful with his hardwork and creativity).
What kind of depth are you referring to here? Maybe I'm misunderstanding something.

I haven't read or watched Harry Potter, and found it boring seeing some when my cousins watched, so can't comment on it lol

You can't just have him face more swordsmen and think that's enough. The foundations of the plot structure would have to be questioned, so that Zoro could act as a proactive character with multiple arcs/mini-arcs of his own.

In this context, his actions and decisions would have as much importance and impact as Sasuke's in Naruto. Each key moment of the character would have ramifications and consequences that went beyond "looking cool while facing the second strongest character in the arc."

Zoro caters as a design to any fan looking for the "edgy" character, like later Goku became more dark and serious, while Luffy is the opposite of that character.
Also a lot of modern One Piece fans today are naruto refugees
