i just finished the east blue saga,
and i cant get my head around how usopp is proud of his dad for following the call to the sea...

Because OP is story about dreams and the limitless scope of ambition. Usopp doesn’t hate his dad because he views his going out to sea as a duty he had to do. Kinda of like how a solidier’s kid wouldn’t hate for being deployed

In my headcanon, Yassop left to find a cure for his wife but since he never found one he was too scared to show his face to Usopp again, but logically yeah Usopp should hate his dad, loving his dad without any backstory explaining whh he left in the first place is another masterclass in Oda being garbage as a writer

If my memory isn't wrong I believe one piece are inspired by a cartoon viking. Men are testing their courage out to sea.

Usopp may have the same mindset that a sea voyage is his ultimate test of courage. His father did it before him. The power of storytelling from his mother might be the inspiration for the coward Usopp not hating his dad. Thus Usopp's coping mechanism would make him not a coward, but a dream chaser.

That maybe the reason Usopp wouldn't hate his dad. The storytelling from his mom.
