Well here we are in the God Valley flashback, and thankfully Oda gave us more about Kaido. He has complained/asked/desired a fruit in 3 out of his 4 flashback appearances.

Let me repeat that. He wanted a devil fruit. That is his flashback persona.

You watched Oda write Kaido saying "Haki triumphs all", only to write Kaido have his strongest move be a fruit ability, a direct contradiction, yet you still have enough faith in Oda to think Kaido's wanting the fruit is a part of his development.

Yes, Oda is definitely trying to signal to us that Kaido wanted fruits then learned about haki. That makes a lot of sense given Kaido spamming his fruit until the bitter end against Luffy!

The idea that Oda is writing that Kaido in youth was a fruit merchant, then matured and realized haki was the truth and became a haki man, is just absurd then. He spammed haki and his fruit until the end, even though that contradicts his previous statement about haki beating all

This is character progression from Kaido even though it's small, when he was younger he wanted a DF but as he matured he learned that haki is the more important power.
People talk shit about his backstory but this is oda giving him some progression right here.

An experienced Kaido's strongest attack is engulfing his dragon form in flames; essentially DF-based.

An EXPERIENCED Kaido chose a DF move as his final attack

He has such an over the top DF based final attack, and still thinks Haki reigns supreme. Makes you wonder how great Haki really is. Not to take anything from DFs. They're all crazy, but Haki simply has a higher ceiling.

Kaido doesn't contradict anything. He said DF alone can't conquer the world. Not that they don't matter. Comparatively he placed more importance to haki which for now is correct given most old gen have better portrayal than Kaido and admirals and most them are haki only users.
