Ace's death helped finish his character arc and is partly the reason why he is remembered as one of the best characters in this manga's history, but I agree with you that Sabo is literally a low budget copy of Ace without emotions, essentially Walmart Ace.

I disagree. I feel like the whole "Can I be loved" character arc wouldve been even better if he survived and saw the lengths people went to save and protect him.

Ace needed to die so destiny can flows properly.

Shanks could've easily arrive together with Whitebeard, but he doesn't, because Ace's death will motivate Luffy. And Nika chose Luffy, so he would prefer fate over his beloved captain's son.

He always make Luffy learns things the hard way. Last time, he purposely sacrifice his arm so Luffy won't be stubborn enough to set sail at early age.

Ace barely had any screentime. He's overrated af. Calling sabo a poor copy of his character is fair for the moment but Im sure by the time we reach the final arcs of OP, Oda will make sabo one of the greatest characters ever. Think about it, he's a revo, has ties with admirals and Dragon, is more mature than Ace, etc.

Ace should have died, the mistake was Oda introducing diet Ace which undermined the best saga in One Piece.
It doesnt undermine anything. Stop creating this false and terrible narrative

It undermines everything lol. Luffy no longer has to face the trauma of losing his only brother, because he has a whole other brother introduced solely so that Oda could give Luffy a copout solution to the only real struggle Luffy has ever faced.

See, that's the problem. You label the trauma that Luffy faced at Marineford as "Luffy lost his only brother" instead of "Luffy lost A brother". Wtf is wrong with you? Losing someone is a traumatic experience all by itself and nothing will ever change that fact. Sabo being there doesnt change anything

I think Ace's death closed off his character arc pretty well (even tho it's sad) and was also necessary for Luffy's character to develop. Luffy always gets what he wants so he rarely reflects on himself and his actions. So post-marineford was one of the first time that he realized he needed to get stronger, can't always rely on blind faith and luck.

What I fail to understand is why Oda thinks Luffy still needed another brother for whatever reason and decided to introduce Sabo. It's like he wanted to replace Ace with a bootleg that even has the same df but just won't compete with Luffy for pk cuz Sabo is a rev, not a pirate.

Also, despite losing Ace, Luffy is back to recklessly doing whatever with no second thought. Tries to take down Kaido, fails, tries to take him down again, rinse and repeat. For what it's worth, Ace's death was really important back during MF and post MF era and also causing the TS but in the long run, it really didn't affect Luffy as a character much and he even got a replacement brother now which kinda undermines Ace's death.

Ace's death was important to make the readers feel more Akainu as a real threat setting him up as the series main villain, at least among the marines, and also to give Luffy a sense of powerlessness in face of people much stronger than him that could kill his friends without him being able to do anything about it, which was necessary as a reason to push him to make the resolution of training for 2 years to get much stronger before attempting to go to the new world again.

As for which character is better than the other, I see Sabo as much better than Ace.

Sabo has a much better design, with clothes that make him look like a Victorian Era gentleman, than Ace, who wears shorts, a terrible looking collar, and is shirtless to show his tattooed body; Just Ace's hat looks very cool.

Comparing the way they fight, Sabo's fighting style is also superior, since he doesn't just use the mera mera no mi to fight, but also uses a pipe, and especially the dragon claw technique looks very cool.

In terms of personality, Sabo is not funny like Ace, which may make him seem somehow bland, but at the same time he's also a lot cooler; I especially liked his speech about how everything has a core that you can hit to turn around any situation, which expresses his role in the story as a key character who will not be straightforward in whatever he wants to do, unlike Ace, but will always be seeking the core of the enemy to gain the upper hand.

Also, Sabo is better because he didn't subject himself to an old man's daddy fantasy.

Because Oda specifically had Ace as Luffy’s only brother for the entirety of the pre timeskip era, only introducing Sabo after Ace died. Which makes it come off like Oda wanted to give Luffy an emotional copout.

He could’ve introduced Sabo before Ace died, but Oda didn’t plan this shit out because he’s not a good writer and only came up with Sabo after he realized that Luffy having to face the death of his only brother might actually lead to character growth for once in Luffy’s life.
