As weird and unbelievable as it may seem because the narrative pushes this too much there is one thing that suggests this fight may not happen. Usually the main villain in an arc only show cases his full arsenal in the fight against Luffy. There are a few moments to hype the villain but most of their arsenal is reserved. BB has been involved in many incidents but his full arsenal and abilities are mainly hidden (off screening Ace, Magellan, Law, WBPs etc.). Shanks is a similar case, even Kaido's hybrid was saved for later (everybody knew he should have one being a Zoan).
But in Akainu's case we have seen quite a lot from him in MF. You can make a case for most of the Admirals but even among those he was given more of a full fight against WB and the others. Of course there is the potential of awakening to be shown.
The chances are pretty low but I think that Akainu vs Luffy may not be a full fight like against the arc's main villain but would be more of a small skirmish/clash.
