King??? Lackluster???

King was awesome. Man had flame dragons he could shoot out, a powerful (albeit odd) defensive ability with his flames, high speed without, and very funny techniques with his pteranodon fruit.

In terms of non Luffy fights he got the best treatment he could’ve.

His weakness is just absurdly stupid. Oda shouldve made his flame form dependant on stamina not speed.

I think he did ok, wasn't expecting that much from him anyways but I really liked his whole thing of being a Lunarian and the existence of a race that can create and manipulate fire, contrasting with the Minks who can create electricity. It seems the reason you felt disappointed with him is cuz you kept comparing him to Katakuri and expected him to cool on the same way Katakuri is cool instead of highlighting King's unique aspects and what makes him uniquely cool.

Katakuri was ranked 42 in popularity poll before he fought Luffy. King was ranked 116 before he fought Zoro. No excuse

The one major problem with King, imo, is that his fight is rushed, he was shown to be strong, and then that's it, no proper named sword technique, after he removed his mask suddenly he's unable to go hybrid and using the Tempuraudon, Andon and any other attack, instead he's just standing there waiting to be sliced while spamming the fire dragon attack so that Oda can show us Zoro cutting dragon and move on to Luffy vs Kaido faster
same problem with the other all star, and the Tobiroppo, and probably with Big Mom as well
Katakuri on the other hand, got lots of time to properly shows his techniques, probably because he's fighting Luffy, although he got the crocodile treatment at the end
