It often amazes me when I see people still invested in the Fairy Hats, imho it’s been clear since the timeskip that Oda doesn’t really care about these shit ass characters and just wants to write a story about a larger world, but he keeps the Straw Hats around so that Shonen Jump doesn’t toss his remains in a dumpster after work, and because to your least common denominator One Piss fan, “this story is all about the Straw Hats!”

Imagine reading a series where literal main characters don’t actually interact with each other for literal human years at a time, and still thinking to yourself that the writer cares about his main characters. Oda would much rather spend his time writing about the larger world and the larger plots, but he keeps these generic main character stand-ins around so idiots have recognizable faces to ferry them through the actual larger and more important plot. I’ve been saying for years now that Oda should’ve just gotten rid of his “main cast” since they now suck donkey ass but even I was taken aback when I saw this statistic. He keeps these cretins around to scream new attack names, do cool poses, and tell shitty ass jokes.

I want to see a Sienen version of One Piece where the Straw Hat crew actually dies before the timeskip and then we switch to all of the vastly more interesting crews and factions and we watch the world just destroy itself as no pirate king emerges. Think Game of Thrones killing off its main protagonist at the end of Season 1, but the manga version of that where the whole world just goes to shit as no pirate king emerges. That to me would’ve been a much better story than what we got post timeskip which was just Oda plagiarizing himself but in an inferior way to his original work.

“Oh but it’s okay because in chapter 1,500 we’ll see flashbacks of Luffy speaking to Franky during the times where we thought they weren’t talking!” <-This is what One Piss defenders will say.

Well they've spoken indirectly in Onigashima when Franky saved Nami from Big Mom and Luffy congratulated him. Still, it's a problem. I hope they speak soon. To be fair, Luffy never was that close to Franky and Whole Cake Island happened where half of the strawhats werent there so its tough to make room for casual chit chat.

Yeah this… is a real problem. Offscreen interactions and addressing the crew as a group doesn’t cut it. Because ON SCREEN character interaction is the heart and soul of your series; the plot can be confusing or mediocre but you absolutely have to nail the main character dynamics. Phase 3 MCU was a huge success based off the Steve-Tony-Thor trio interactions. We wanted to see them support and forgive each other. We wanted them to clash and clear up misunderstandings. The Straw Hats don’t talk to each other about almost anything of substance, most of them have zero storyline’s, development needs or individual goals beyond ‘follow Luffy and somehow my dream will come true hehe’. Which is why many older readers will continue becoming completely disillusioned with the series before it inevitably jumps the shark like Naruto and Bleach.

Well, if it was a seinen then it wouldn't really be One Piece anymore. Lol.

A still shonen friendly way around this could have been to have something like what Kingdom does, where you have a core cast of protagonists within the main group (e.g. Shin, Kai and Ten) and then have secondary characters within the main group that come to the forefront when their established skillset is needed for a scenario (e.g. Denyuu's strength, Shousa's leadership etc.)

Out of all the legit ways one can criticize the writting of the SHs you choose a non-issue that is honestly undestandable given the context of the story. Luffy and Franky literally weren't in the same place between the end of Zou and until after Luffy gets freed from Udon, after which we get yet another large scale conflict full of characters and plotlines.

Edgelords like you who can't get the heart and humor of the series and just got in cause Marineford made you think this manga was all about wars and powerscaling, but then come here acting like they're amazing writers and that the series should be more like a seinen piss me off.

Go read Kingdom to get what you want.

The problem is that the main cast don't have as many meaningful interactions with each other. Its like Robin spending 2 years with the RA and never telling Luffy she was around his father for example.
Another example is how nobody asked Zoro why he lost his eye.

Oda would rather repeat the same gag for the 100th time than get the strawhats to have simple conversations related to each other's circumstances.
