Character Discussion Are Kaido and Linlin important to the story?

A Story is simply what Author wants to Draw, Everything & Everyone is Important by that Definition
If by Important you mean whether They are necessary for a certain Plot Reveal, then No One is Important because as an Author you can remove anyone & anything you want, and reach your desired Plot Reveal without them, even Luffy isn't Important by this Definition
But if you mean "Important" as in They are closer to being Main Characters more than to being Minor Characters (Panel Time & Interactions with others & Connection to Sub-Plot/Mysteries/Factions), then Kaidou & Big Mom are clearly Major Important Characters

They were both important to the story, each in their own respective arc.

If by any chance the magma didn't kill them, there's a small chance that they will find Pluton under the island. If they try to take hold of it and release it, then there's a point to Yamato staying behind to try to defend it.

Kaido began his fight in 987 and was defeated in 1049 to 1050, 63 chapters beating Joyboy and those mentioned by Oden as the only ones capable of bringing down Kaido in the future... 63 damn chapters fighting non-stop, to give you an idea:

Only BM. She actually seemed to be a more well thought character and had connections to the world in a way that, while evil, made some sense. Even her relationship with Giants was explained and waiting to be explored.
Kaido had no proper purpose and Oda clearly didn't think things through with him. Unlike BM he didn't had a proper connection to the world and didn't had a proper personality or ideals. Wano was a waste of space and a shit arc because of him.

Another shit idea. In practice he would know what Law did in PH and use him for his army. Nothing in the smiles is better than what Law can do with his fruit (and people can still eat a proper decent fruit).
Compare with BM army that was actually well organized and had proper fruits and the smiles looks even more pathetic. Remove kaido from the story and nothing changes. He is a waste of space.

Not anymore is the most likely answer but overall I would say yes, at least for Kaido. He was the enemy of the "yonko saga" which lasted forever, on the other hand there are a lot of characters more important than Kaido and BM: Joyboy, Roger, WB, Xebec, Im, Dragon, Shanks, Mihawk, BB, Garp, all the SHs, Buggy maybe or even probably and most likely some others I forgot.
If kaido and big mom are not important, neither are:
Freezer, Cell in dragon ball
Any match except Sannoh in Slam dunk.
The chuunin exam, the sound quintet fight, the fight between taunade Jiraya and Orochimaru in Naruto.
The tower fights in HxH.
Most of the berserk except the golden age (only the eclipse i guess)
Stop saying random shit

Dragonball wasn't 1 grand story like One Piece so this isn't an apples to apples comparison. Dragonball arcs are more self contained since they are not leading to a grand conclusion.
I would say that none of those fights were important in the war arc. Kishimoto failed to build upon the start of the show in the middle arcs.
Every fight is meaningless in HxH. Send in the nukes.
