Powers & Abilities Asura is the embodiment of Zoro's promise to Luffy

#1
One thing I always found odd about Zoro's asura, is how exclusive it is compared to the other SH's power ups. Whereas Sanji uses DJ all the time, Luffy uses his gears all the time, chopper uses monster point all the time, ect. Zoro has only used asura 3 times in the entire series.

Why is that? Why didn't zoro learn to use asura casually over the timeskip, like the rest of the SHs did their power ups? Why didn't zoro use asura against king when he needed a power up to win?

I've noticed something about asura. In each of the 3 times zoro used it, he was heavily injured and on the verge of breaking his promise to Luffy. His promise to never lose.

Right before he used asura for the first time, Kaku unleashed an onslaught on zoro which resulted in zoro taking a lot of damage from kaku's blows. Had it not been for asura, zoro would have likely lost.

In the 2nd scenario, many might not remember this, but if you re-read the chapter in which zoro used asura against the pacifista, you will notice this. In chapter 510(the one he uses asura in), Oda begins the fight showing zoro severely injured with Luffy questioning if zoro was able to move. Zoro is far more messed up than any other straw hat, and sanji comments that Zoro still hasn't healed from the damage he took from kuma in thriller bark. And that it is extremely painful for zoro to merely fight the pacifista.
Again, in this scenario, zoro had a high chance of losing were it not for asura.

Then Lastly against kaido. Zoro had broken many of his bones from hakai. Luffy had passed out due to ragnaraku. Kaido was going to kill Luffy, if zoro didn't do something. While zoro ultimately did get booted from the rooftop due to his injuries, victory can have different meanings. In that scenario, the rooftop was a team fight and Luffy was the strongest member. By using asura, zoro was able to draw Kaido's attention away from Luffy for enough time for Luffy to recover. Zoro saved Luffy and in doing so, ensured the allies' victory, even if some might say that Zoro ultimately took an L on the rooftop. Also, ZKK could still happen which would mean that ultimately Kaido was the one who lost to zoro.

So I feel like overall the theme fits. Asura is a technique that zoro will only use when he is nearing defeat. As kaku said, it is an illusion zoro creates through sheer will. And from Kaido's reaction to asura, it is heavily hinted that the technique could be tied to CoC, which was said by rayleigh to be the embodiment of the user's spirit.

I believe that Asura is a CoC technique that was created out of Zoro's promise to Luffy and his desire to never lose. That zoro's desire to never lose is so great that his haki basically distorts reality to fulfill this desire.

The only issue with your theory in reference to ashura is the Kaku fight. Dude was actually less injured than he was fighting king and even then he used ashura against Kaku. Infact Kaku mentioning Robin's name and him thinking of her and her sacrifice is what pissed him off to use it. He then thanked Kaku one shotted him with it and immediately continued bodying marines afterwards. He wasn't even tired of felt the need to rest lol

With King, Zoro got a power up from enma , which ultimately saved him

but he was about to be defeated against kaku, were it not for Asura. There's a huge element of plot involved.

Yes and no sense based on zoros words he needed all of his blades with advanced coc including enma.

Actually up until kaku got his swords and increased his speed using body modification thanks to his fruit zoro was relatively fine infact Kaku was the one who had to go back for his own blades to have a cha ce at winning and even then after zoro one he simply walked off. No panting. No resting. No passing out. Dude hadn't hadn't mentioned that this was hard fight he told kaku "you did well" lol

I think its more like Zoro doesn't use it simply because its overkill
Zoro was far from near death against Kaku, Mr1 wrecked him a lot more.

It is exactly what manga says it is - an aura of a demon. Zoro is probably a reincarnation of some demon which would make chapter 3 line true - demon in human form. Slowly all those lines from the past are coming true and that one might as well.
Asura is also Zoro's version of the D clan. While members of D clan are enemies of gods, so are Asuras, the power-hungry beings.
It is the embodiment of Zoro's willpower, aiming for the very top and nothing else.

Why is that? Why didn't zoro learn to use asura casually over the timeskip, like the rest of the SHs did their power ups? Why didn't zoro use asura against king when he needed a power up to win?
Because Zoro is too strong, without Asura and with Asura. He doesnt need permanent modes like Luffy and Sanji do.
Asura was not a solution for King, King cannot be harmed when in defense mode and Zoro needed to figure out how King's body works.
Asura appeared in two instances - when Santoryu cant stop overwhelming style Yontoryu or when target is hard to cut(Pacifista/Kaido).
King in defense mode isnt hard to cut but impossible to cut and thus Asura wasnt useful, in the cutting area particularly.

But this pretty much means that Zoro is pretty much unbeatable doesn't it??

Actually makes sense, it would explain why Asura is so weak because it's like his empty promise that has been broken five or six times since he made it

Zoro's promise to never lose ****UNTIL HE BECOMES THE WSS

Asura is the manifestation of his sheer will and ambition after all.

The man was already famous and known for being a demon who took the shape of a human even before he met Luffy.
