It's more on Luffy's hands tbh, Sanji never promised his goal was to protect Vegapunk, Luffy did way earlier in the arc. Also Sanji saved him once even if it wasn't his goal. All Sanji said was that he would bring Vegapunk with him, and he did, but he was dead lol

BUT even if you consider that Sanji's role was to not let Vegapunk die, he at least tried. But for Zoro there is no excuses other than he wasn't that much stronger than Lucci or that he was simply holding back for whatever reason (thus why Sanji needed to piss him off for him to do something worthy)
