Now that you mention it, I really need to watch Arcane. I've heard nothing but good things about that show.
I could never tell where it classified though, is it fantasy, sci fi, cyberpunk or something else?
Aw man dude, Arcane is one of the BEST series i've ever seen, not even comparable! I'm extremely biased as a major Jinx and League stan but still! The production quality, the heart of it, the music, voice acting, writing, animation and art, its all PHENOMENAL! Absolutely exceptional! It's a truly tragic emotional drama, it pulls no punches and I could not ask for BETTER for one of my favourite characters and my favourite League champion ever! I dreamt of this series for YEARS and it delivered so much better than I could even expect and imagine!
To this day, the writing, voice acting, music, certain major moments including the ending stand out to me above MANY, many, other things I've seen and on their own too, I really cannot describe nor compare it!
Bertween Cyberpunk Edgerunners and Arcane, I've never seen better series, genuinely! Only other one I could compare them to is Death Parade! Cowboy Bebop seems like it has potential to join them and maybe Black Lagoon too but I don't watch that many series, especially compared to a lot of users here either ofc. So I'm just going by my own experiences only naturally.
Genre wise, it focuses on Piltover and Zaun only for now, so its mostly steampunk. Runeterra, the world of League of Legends and Arcane has a TON of areas/regions and variety to them. There's high tech and "low tech", steampunk and cyberpunk even, noir, a touch of fantasy (fantasy in in other regions WAY heavier by far though), you could say sci-fi but other parts of League/Runeterra again are more sci-fi. There's a lot Industrialism to Zaun, the gloomy, "peasant/bandit" undercity, whereas Piltover is the shiny, glossy, perfect as can be, super advanced futuristic city.
There's heavy themes of crime and even noir with Zaun and thus Arcane/League too.
There's characters from Zaun and Piltover who don't even appear in Arcane as well as from outside those regions but connected to those regions and champions/characters in them and they are so very fucking interesting, brutal, chaotic, stylish, scary, imaginative, creative etc.
You also get to meet people from Noxus another major region in this and they are HUGE wildcards in every sense of the word, MASSIVE powerplayers/game changers and very brutal, militaristic, but more terms of bandits/rogues and a self made, neutral force of anarchy/chaos and especially bloodshed, conquering, meritocracy, expansionism especially etc.
It gets way more complicated and thus in-depth and varied than this too lol.
Arcane is a fantastic standalone project too though, you don't need to be familiar with League of Legends/anything Runeterra to watch and enjoy it though, even as it's own individual thing, a spinoff, it is AMAZING, genuinely the best thing to ever come from Riot and thus League of Legends, not even comparable!
