What is unique from the Legato-Vash-Knives dynamics is really the rock-paper-scissors elements of their powers.

Legato's wires are strong against Vash's guns.

Vash's guns are strong against Knives' knives.

Knives' knives are strong against Legato's wires.

And you're right in that Legato pushed Vash's moral limits the furthest. Actually, I think Legato is also the one who pushed Vash the hardest in actual fight since he is the only one who made Vash go Dark Stampede. Knives never even came close.
If I remember Trigun MAXIMUM correctly, Vash's hardest fights were probably Legato, Knives, Hoppered the Gauntlet and his 2v2 team up with Wolfwood against Chapel and Livio.

Manga Hoppered was a completely different breed to his anime counterpart. Lol. He was Vash's first opponent that forced him to use his Plant abilities.

You instantly knew this man was a serious deal when Nightow suddenly went all out on this panel.
This super swole cripple damn near killed base form Vash. :risisweat:

I reread Trigun last year and I think Vash vs Hoppered fight was only difficult because Vash's heart was not into it and he barely bothered to attack back. I mean, Hoppered had a legit reason to hate Vash, was a victim, and was not at all evil, so it is understandable why that fight looked difficult on the outset for the soft-hearted Vash.

Vash did not take any damage at all when helping Wolfwood against Razlo and Chapel, and Wolfwood did like 90% of the work, so I would not consider that a difficult fight for Vash. At least, not physically.

His first fight against Knives in MAXIMUM would have ended in his mid-diff W had it not been for Legato's interference since Vash nearly absorbed Knives. His last fight against Knives was only difficult for him since he did not care to damage Knives and instead tried to convince the other plants to separate from Knives.

Really, it's only Legato where there is no excuse to be had for how extremely difficult that fight was for Vash. I always thought that Legato could have soloed all 13 Gung-Ho Guns if he had wanted to and his final fight against Vash just confirmed my opinion for me. Legato is easily Trigun's strongest human character.

Vash is always nerfing himself and hardest is a comparative term. Lol. Legato is by far and away his toughest fight and the other three stuck in the forefront of my mind compared to others. Other fights like Dominique and Leonof was just figuring out the gimmick and then crushing them.

Well E.G. Mine was also at the forefront of my mind as a prime example of a neg diff. He didn't even get to unleash his gimmick. Dude got duffle bag diffed.:milaugh:

Rai-Dei gets props for being the craziest man in the world for favouring a sword on a planet called Gunsmoke. :risicheck:

Legato is honestly almost the primary villain for Trigun. He's the most proactive major antagonist, remains evil to the end and challenges the protagonist's ideals like no other.

And yeah, Legato would simultaneously crush the Gung-ho Guns and is undoubtedly the strongest human on Gunsmoke.

I really need to finish attack on titan. I didn't even know Eren became a villain, like what happened. I think I got as far as Sasha's death. Time to rewatch I guess. Not right now though lol.

Also he villains in this bracket are real good. There are some picks here I wanted to vote for but it is what i is.

When I think of it, the GHG members in MAXIMUM is significantly more competent than the ones shown in the prequel. On top of what you said, Monev is practically nothing without his power suit.

Leonoff is a mid-diff fight for Vash and even then only because he spammed the Sky City colony's puppet corpses. He landed like a scratch on Vash. The true highlight of that arc was how fucking tough to kill Grey the Ninelives was (really lived up to his nickname lmao).

After the gimmick merchant that was Dominique, it was a major departure to have the last and the strongest GHG to be a woman like Erendira. Since it took Livio/Razzlo combo to take Erendira down, I have always wondered if Wolfwood could have beaten her in a fight or how far she could have pushed Vash.

Rai-Dei gets props for being the craziest man in the world for favouring a sword on a planet called Gunsmoke. :risicheck:
Rai-Dei the Roller Blade. :gokulaugh:

I wish Wolfwood hadn't cheap-shotted him after he lost the duel against Vash, sometimes. :suresure:

I knew Legato was gonna be a menace in MAXIMUM when his first appearance was stuffing all those poor dozens of cops into their tiny squad car and making sure they were alive to the bitter end. :CoolPeace:
