D. Gray Man is masterpiece!
1. Plot - this story called Gray for the damn reason, case no one even today don't know how this manga will end, and who is right, or who is wrong. Ofc this will never mean that evil and light side will unite against other enemy. No. And reason for that I will explain later. Maybe at the begining you could get false feeling that this story is just about typical villain who wants destroy humanity, but later you eventually understand that things are far more crazy then you think. At the very least you get the hint that world was destroyed 7000 years ago and have only few survivers, strange
And yet ofc there hundreds of mysteries, characters death and other lit stuff,like Villain who killed whole people in one country and I'm talking about millions. True genocide,human experiments on exorcists, that was commited by "Light " side, leading by same character that was called Wrath in FMA...yep another Hitler, still he is on opposite side from devils, whixh is interesting;
2. Main and side Characters - everyone knew character from FMA Edward? Well, MC of D Man called Allan Walker and he is similar to Edward, but maybe more mature. Also Allan can kill his enemies, and don't believe in "saving all" thing, like saving enemies from being evil. But still he is, or was at least, pretty optimistic, believing that he could save people who is actually from one step from death(to be clear that once not only ended with death of thst character, but Allen also was nearly dead).
Kanda Yu...swordman. For me he was always someone who is much better than Zoro. Yes, he could act ruthless, cruel or even like masochist, but meanvile he is a true leader, he acts on his own and have his own group, and he even became squad captain. Also his background is deep and explane a lotabout him.
Lenalee - female mc, who is actually strong. Usually she was able to beat oppinents that Allen wasn't...till her nerf ofc(after battle when she had to die she lost her powers for a while). Still her character is written pretty good. She is not a fanservice character, no one ever fall on her boobs, or else, also she wears clothes that not reveal much.
Lavi - bookworm...he is that guy, whose secrets still wasn't revealed. Also even if I call him bookworm, he is looking like some punk or pirate: eyepatch, bandana and cool style. But yes, he is riddicules smart. He even won in dream world nighmare game to death against Road, who possibly is smartest character in whole manga. Also his weapon is hammer.
Miranda- this lady is the one that when you see her first time you will call her: what an ugly, crazy old woman. But then...then she became hot, smart, beutiful. And you just start to pray on her. Also her power is really broken - time manipulation and tut ime barriers all the way.
Marian Cross - aka worst sensei, selfish, but sexy...he fuck all beautiful woman right there and everywhere. This dude is real casanova...he fucked milf, and after her death he fucked her daughter. Prostitutes? No way...he will made woman pay for dinner with him LOL Also...he is wearing priest clothing...Also he is riddiculesly coolamd smart. He planned half of D.Gray Man story, case littteraly everything there happened like that, only case he predicted everything and outsmarted his enemies, basically makung em get into his trap;
3. Villains - well, how about you meet immortal beings that can't die and live for 7000 years +?! Yep, that is what you can calla villain. Now ofc allof them a different, but first remember thay they look like noble Dark Elfc
a) Tyki Mikk - guy live with two lifes one of them is crazy maniac killler, while other is just normal guy who is working hard in mine. He has style tho...and he is really powerful. He can manipulate everything that surround him inclluding air. That's why he can walk threw objects, walk on air or reject air making vacuum zone. Also he is smart...he is trying dig deep and find out meaning of things like why that or otherthing happened; Best Allen friend...they was close to kill each other few times in row. And twice time it was look like both succeed;
b) Road Camelot - cruel, crazy, cute...she live in dream world and can manipulate reality - making things from her dream world became true. Allen gf, was really close to kill him and his friends, and not just once;
c) Jasdebi - I could say most iconic villains. They use brain like Road, buti n the end it is also their game.
d) Lulubell - dark elven girl who can change her appearence, but not just visually, but also from inside, which let her be unbeateble, and she can turn into giant creatures like dragons, water elements, or into some small creatures, whatever she needs in her mission;;
c) I can't talk much about Earl...byt he always wearing costume that hide his real face and body for important reason;
4. Power System:
In D. Gray Man basically power system split on using light power and dark power. It has explanation why it is like that, but that's it. In case of dark power, it could be anything that you can imagine in the world: power of dream world, shapeshifting(in any form that user wants), lightening, gravity, power to walk threw objects etc. In case of light side: it can be some song that weakened ememies, time manipulations, power of drawing etc. Light and Darkness counter each other;
5. Story arcs:
D Gray Man have only 5 or7 arcs(depends on counting), It's story don't have a point when like character could rest. Case everything was paced in one whole story. So yes there was few moments when you understand "it's over", but those are rare one. Also story arcs include: battle in different countries(Japan, England, Russia, China), battle in differend worlds, oven fighting on Noah Arc- hight tecnology spaceship(?), fighting in the middle of ocean;
6. Art in D. Gay man could be called as one of the best art in manga history, especially in the end. It is realistic and full of details. Character faces was drawn pretty neat and you coud always recognise character emotion. While if you talk abou background what time mangaka usually draw, it will be 19- th centuery. In last chapters mostly all panels in chapter is art picture, even small one;
7. Fights:
D. Gray Man has pretty complex fights...usually enemies are too strong for heroes, or even defeated enemy moment ago could just awake in few minutes, awakened with power on whole new lvl, so he can destroy heroes(and that in case when even before awakened mod he was far stronger). So this fights could always have fifferent outcome: could be losing of villain, could be draw, could be losing of hero(with death ofc). Also one fight usually could take more than 5 chapters, where each has 30 pages. Battles even could have phases...so each fight will be something special;
8. World Building: because of fact that Noah family gather an army of bio-machines, turned from human douls they play reapers role. So they use all sources like money, politic(cor causing wars) and much more. And they act from their spaceship Noah Arc, where all their power systems located, including dark matter- source of their power. From other hand Black Order is just a branch that was creates by Vatican, so there exist much more branches in whole world that is connected to church, or is working on it. Basically it will be slways special science unit that has their own base etc. And ofc case Noah family wants to "destroy world" every country, every nation of humans are involved;
9. Future potential: D. Gray Man is ongoing. Mangaka case real healthy problems. She got surgery on her right hand, so she can't draw much as she wants. It is forbidden to her Still she always gives us new chapter in time, 4 chapters in year. And yes this story has big potential, especially case right now we are in that point of story where half of mysteries will be revealed, and than World End will begin. So that will be final battle...so it is time to read this masterpiece.

but exactly those villains, who basically give second birth to humanity. And actually trying prevent the End of World that they created...ofc even with cost of destroying humans, just to win the war.

There only few mangas that can be compared to D. Gray Man: Berserk, HxH(maybe), JoJo(case it is legend);
While Naruto, Bleach, MHA, Toriko, BC, OP, OPMis right now not even close to be called as masterpiece. Ofc some manga have potential, other manga already was finished. But to put em as best? As masterpiece? This is too much at least for me.

Well I can't comment on it, as I've only read Berserk out of that list, however, I've never, or very very very rarely seen anyone bring up D. Gray Man, besides you and maybe @Cross_Marian before.

Time of Glory of D. Gray Man come to end when mangaka wasn't able to write, case of her really serious problem with health. And that happened in 2012. Hunter x Hunter nowadays is popular for example not because it is good manga, but case it have another anime released in 2011 year. While D. Gray Man got second season in 2015 with cutted things, also that included scandal between Hoshino Katsura and studio, which made fans hate, so it was never popular, and case it was continuation of story people who didn't watch DGM, didn't even try to watch it.Mangaka really put her soul in manga, so apparently skiping important things to her didn't feel good. Also despite of popularity, first DGM season wasn't best, case of huge amount of fillers.
So yeah, I'm not surpised that people nowadays didn't mention DGM, case they didn't know it. Our only hope is new anime of DGM that will be done as Hunter x Hunter, case even first season(it long for 100 episodes) with whole filler stuff was popular in ratings. But for whole new anime we need at least final battle get started.
