The best part of “A Cruel Angel’s Thesis” is the juxtaposition between the upbeat opening and the actual mind fuck that is Evangelion!

people tend to forget that most of the quote mind fuck stuff happened later

alot of episodes were upbeat and were comedic in nature

Asuka and shinji had a episode about working together

Where they brushed teeth

and danced

There's entire characters which act for comedic purposes and are not in anyway serious eg penpen or shinji's classmates

I loved the down time in the beginning of Evangelion. It was like a standard monster of the week formula. Then Toji’s eva gets possessed by an angel and it’s all downhill from there!
