Since we saw the formation of the new devil fruit created after Smiley (a nearby fruit transformed into the axolotl fruit when it died), is it possible that Blackbeard and his crew are simply carrying fruits with them when they kill devil fruit users, which then become the fruit?
Blackbeard then could have simply had a fruit with him when Whitebeard died, then eaten it with the power, with the black shroud being misdirection and for secrecy. With his darkness fruit power and/or “strange physiology” he is able to use both and potentially more. His crew is able to kill fruit users and then use the same method to get the closest fruit and eat it.
Not sure if this has already been theorized before?
The real mystery being Blackbeard’s ability to use both, which I think may be an inherited trait of Buccaneers, but also may represent the ability of the darkness fruit to absorb anything including the devil/dream from the dying person, and as long as Blackbeard is the darkness the devils do not fight in his body. They are simply comfortable inside him because he is an infinite dark void.
