Who are some characters in One Piece that are supposed to be great heroes or characters we should admire and love, or at least sympathetic but that fail to gain sympathy or respect from you with the manga making them appear as far from admirable or sympathetic as Oda intended them to be ?

I had thought this about Whitebeard as well.

But it's really their code of honour and pride of their "family".

If a member of their crew is held hostage, they have to go try and get him back.
But if the member is already dead (Oden, Thatch); then it becomes just revenge game where the victim is already dead, so they won't engage in it.

Doflamingo did the same. He didn't go even when his sworn brother Vergo died, he just accepted it.
But he went in, risking even his shichibukai position to attack marines, when his two crew members were held hostage instead.
And again, this is a "family" like that of WBP.

"Family" type crews in one piece operate upon these principles I guess.

However.......one must wonder if Whitebeard would go to war with marines, if a random fodder of WBP was held hostage. By their structure, he would be WB's "son" and "brother" of other WBPs. But would they really go?? I would like to think yes.

A fodder isn’t worth being held at an execution platform broadcasted to the world, at best the fodder would be killed off or held prisoner but the news wouldn’t spread like wildfire, if the whitebeard pirates know where the fodder is present they will most likely show up but probably not as a grand fleet or anything because a fodder isn’t anywhere on the realm of importance and potential as ace was.
