Had Luffy not been the MC he would surely have died at least as soon as Alabasta after Crocodile pierced him or after he drained him of his water.

I recall Oda made Going Merry become a sentient being in order to save him at Enies Lobby, that was emotional but forced : P also because Luffy had no great use over VoAT yet

Ah yes that was pure plot armor too, but you know what I found even worse : it's that the allies of the Straw Hats at Enies Lobby (Franky Family, Galley La Cie and the giants) all survived thanks to Paulie having somehow endless and indestructible ropes. That was pure BS.
