The D. doesn't mean anything. People out of it started to make their own interpretations ("It means devil!", "It means dawn!", "It means dreams!"), but the clan began to use the middle D. because of either the smile they put while leaving their home (the Great Kingdom) or the half-sun they witnessed during the sunset of their civilization (waiting for the dawn when it'd come back).

You're just replacing speculation with more speculation at best. Anyway, the font used in the manga doesn't always have a D that resembles a smiling mouth or half circle.

Some in Japan are also guessing it's Dawn, that's a pretty strong guess given what we know.

And there's nothing wrong with it because it's a perfectly valid option from a narrative point of view, especially considering how related the D. are to laughing and smiling.

Anybody can guess at this point it's Dawn, whether Japanese or not. It's the most obvious possibility as of now, which at the same time makes it doubtful since Oda would be following the easy route.

It's not that easy if you're guessing it's something else, y'know?

But in the bounty poster it does resemble a smiling mouth, which is what matter. We read a visual medium

I think ultimately is supposed to be a smile, which could mean alot of things to someone. Similarly to a jolly roger as explained by hiriluk

Luffy's first bounty was a good bit later. The fonts have changed over time but in text they don't quite resemble a cut in half circle.

Whenever we hear about D. Clans, we see people saying "they will bring the dawn"
they bring storms (the change)
Oda's first manga is named Romance Dawn! Not forgetting the characters are identical.

Here is my theory and speculations:

Laugh Tale island is where the Dawn clan lived as part of the ancient Kingdom. They were cheerful people, smiling even in front of death.

We know that Dawn is the first light prior sunrise, the beginning of the day.
So What happens when pirates see the dawn? They cheer up and party! it always bring a smile on people's face.

I believe there are 7 families of Dawn's clan:
1. Monkey Dawn
2. Marshall Dawn (i believe they are the traitors , they have abnormal bodies)
3. Gol Dawn
4. Portgas Dawn (they have red hair)
5. Jaguar Dawn (they are mainly Giants)
6. Trafalgar Dawn
*7. Rocks Dawn

?! What is JOY BOY family? Is a Monkey D or Gold D.?

Gol means a Mild Oath! Remember Rogers? Yup the dude believed it and took oath to find out.
Monkeys are cheerful and cheeky
Jaguars are strong big cats;
Trafalgar is a mountain in Spain, we see that Law even cut a mountain.
Marshall comes from Mare (french word) which means Horse and Skalzozz which means Servant.
Portgas is a combination of Port and Gas...
*Rocks are solid matters used for construction, battles etc, something people relies on.

I conclude with "A person when he sees the Dawn, will take a mild oath as he is on the mountain looking strong and cheerful. "

Each family name resembles the character's attitudes and path.

*Modification due to recent infos qe got from chapter 957 about Rocks D.
I now think there is 9 or 10 families in Dawn Clan
We just found out of the 8th family (since I believe Joyboy family was the leading /chief family)

Joyboy D. --> Chief Family
Rocks D. --> NW?
Monkey D. --> Goa Kingdom (East Blue)
Gol D. --> East Blue
Porgas D. --> West Blue
Jaguar D. --> South Blue/NW elblaf
Trafalgar D. --> North Blue
Nerfertarti D. --> Alabasta (East blue)
?? The last family or last 2 families is yet to be revealed , they will be from NW? (Kozuki & Ryuo fishman family? )
