DCEU: Lanterns (HBO Max)

#81
- No Green Lantern constructs for a green lantern show
- A cop gets away with murdering their partner for “reasons”
- A superhero gets killed in the most anticlimactic/cartoonish way possible, like it doesn’t even look plausible with how we found him.
- Manhunter gets away with breaking out a genocidal criminal
- John Stewart picks up an evil lantern made from an evil intergalactic war criminal and doesn’t question it
- Stewart acts like a dick to Guy despite Guy being a much better superhero for his actions in Superman
- The shows hand waves Stewart’s abuse from his parents because “his mom was scared”

just off the top of my head. There’s tons of reviews picking it apart if you want more

Scorsese doesn’t like the genre, Morrison is literally a comics book writer, one of the best at that.

and lowkey infinity war is shit compared to goodfellas. It’s best to enjoy things for what they are instead of acting like they’re better than
The guy who made God of War thinks that the Ragnarok version of Kratos is dogshit. His opinion isn’t fact

So nothing related to the actual writing of the show and everything related to your expectations ? I understand.

1. There are green lantern construct.
2. I could make this thread political for the murder thing, but I don't think this is wise: sum up: Prison is not the only form of justice.
3. Genocidal criminal is stuck alone on an island that he can't escape, I don't see how this is "breaking out".
4. There are no reasons for John here to think said lantern is evil. To John, it's just a different Lantern.
5. This is nonsense
6. This show is highly realistic on this aspect, it's not black and white, parents will often abuse their children for shit reasons like that

No these are actual writing criticism, some which like I mentioned before Grant Morrison has brought up. You know, someone who has decades of writing this stuff? and created an actual form of art?
and everything related to your expectations ? I understand.
Everything? Did i come into the show expecting a cop getting away with murder? LMAOOOOO

1. There are green lantern construct.
There are none in the last 2 episodes
2. I could make this thread political for the murder thing, but I don't think this is wise: sum up: Prison is not the only form of justice.
ah yeah lets do that with all abusive partners and cops who kill innocent people. "Prison is not the only form of justice" fucking ridiculous
3. Genocidal criminal is stuck alone on an island that he can't escape, I don't see how this is "breaking out".
with a means to create fear based lanters and eventually rings, which is literally the set up for the Sinestro Corps. Are you not familiar with the GL lore at all?
4. There are no reasons for John here to think said lantern is evil. To John, it's just a different Lantern.
other than the fact that it was created by an evil guy for evil purposes. bruh imagine bending over backwards to defend this shit.

and that's just in universe common sense. In the GL lore the fear based lanters are the yellow lanters created by Sinestro, aka a bunch of baddies

5. This is nonsense
Guy stopped a genocide and has help people to account. John so far has let a cop get away with murder.
6. This show is highly realistic on this aspect, it's not black and white, parents will often abuse their children for shit reasons like that
Yeah and sometimes people get raped and the rapist get away with it. How would you feel if in a show a woman is raped by her ex and at the end of the show she just waves it off as " he was scared too"

John Stewart is hesitant to use that "evil" lantern. On one hand he makes his own oath but on the other hand there better be consequences within the next season/film.

THIS or the writing team goes on an even more different path.

No. He's a LARPer only out to inject cheap ass politics in any form of entertainment.
Someone doesn't have to go to prison. But there is a need for dramatic consequence to such big action as killing. John Stewart takes the responsability for the murder by hiding its culprit. Basically there is a transfer of consequence, John Stewart is taking it now. It's just typical tv series writing with cliffhanger. Let's see you all next time his character appears !

Hal Jordan is a killer, he killed John Stewart in that car crash who was only saved by Zoe. The actions of Hal have led to a massacre done by Zoe which dramatically resulted in almost (and "only" for US law) a decade of prison and a miserable death by the only person that theoretically cared about him.

Not really no. These are expectation based critics, moral point of view and expressions on how you think these character should be portraryed as. Nothing to do with the actual writing of the show.

Grant morrison or not, these are not a critic on the quality of the show.

Everything? Did i come into the show expecting a cop getting away with murder? LMAOOOOO
No, you expected your own vision of life to apply to this show, that's all.

You'll learn that some people consider prison not as the solution but as the problem, including victims. Now, if you don't want me to bring you into the warth of a political discussion, let's agree that you are projecting your moral here, nothing more.

Nop. I care about the show, not the comic for the moment. The only thing I know is that Sinestro killed a guardian and was casted away, that's all that I need.

For the moment, I like this choice.

You are the only one here applying your mannichean logic to this situation. Furthermore Sinestro in this show is not depicted as evil, but as a person parasited by fear of being overshadowed, a simple murderer.

and that's just in universe common sense. In the GL lore the fear based lanters are the yellow lanters created by Sinestro, aka a bunch of baddies
Spoiler: this is not a comic. There are gonna be some big changes. Things that will shock you. This is the point of art.

Guy stopped a genocide and has help people to account. John so far has let a cop get away with murder.
Guy wouldn't have done nothing if Lois and the rest didn't hammer the point. Guy is selfish, self centered, and completely uninterested in doing good selflessly. Guy is a jerk. A cool and funny jerk, but a jerk nonetheless.

John saw a situation that was unsolvable and made a simple ethical calculus:

> The child needs his mother to stay on the right path

This is the entire fucking point of the entire fucking show: it's the action of forgiving or at least accepting a mother who has done an horrible thing to move on and allow everyone to heal. Including John himself.

This is not supposed to be pleasing for you or for John, it's supposed to be a challenging choice, something that can be uncomfortable but healing. Both for John's family and for the world of the show.

The morality and choices of ethics are not up to you here, it's up to the characters who have been abused and choose the path that will allow for peace to really happen. Things that happen everyday in real life.

Yeah and sometimes people get raped and the rapist get away with it. How would you feel if in a show a woman is raped by her ex and at the end of the show she just waves it off as " he was scared too"
1. It's not up to me to judge the words of victims on their abusers. But I doubt that any solid show would do that.
2. The show doesn't show that she only does it out of fear. It's a lot more complicated than that.
3. Maybe one day you will understand that victim of abuse can forgive or at least accept their abusers. Life is not black and white.

This show is realistic in regard to the depiction of the abuse AND the depiction of the way John deal with it.

Dismissing the criticism of someone who actually creates art as “expectations” and trying to legitimize yours instead is fucking crazy levels of narcissism LMAO. I remember why i don’t engage with your weird ass

anyways Hal literally calls Sinestro evil, so we’re literally told in the show he’s evil. Even by your own standards you’re not following the story of the show.

You creates criticism based on your own values (without taking the material context of the show into account) AND your own expectation of what a Green Lantern show should be. This is the same process as people trashing Oda because their character do not have the aura they expected in One Piece. It's all a big single problem.

You and many people experience stories as you wish they would be, not as they are. This creates a constant flow of dissapointment.
I'm simply describing the point of the show as it is, that's all.

The words of Hal =/= the depiction of the show

Hal said a lot of BS in this show. I'll be willing to listen to this argument when we actually see how "evil" Sinestro really is. Perhaps I forgot one aspect for sure, but the for the moment, the guy is a simple murderer.

More annoying than the “media literacy” crowd who don’t even know what good writing is and unironically pull the “themes and such” card are people who genuinely don’t understand why GL fans or anyone even remotely familiar with the stories expect more than 5 fucking minutes of constructs in an 8 hour show.

:Shadow_Unimpressed:
"It's a True Detective style series bro"
"Galatic fights wouldn't work bro"
"Comics Green Lanterns are too goofy"

Kyle hard carried the show, but the ending didn't stick imo.

I generally liked the series, but it made it difficult to like it after the last few eps, and the finale soured it.

The sheriff walking away scot free for killing Hal for no reason is like wtf man. John letting Noah and Kerry just walk away as well.

Idk. Solid series, but bad final stretch.

If they do a szn 2 they will need Kyle back for sure, so it might be Parallax, but idk with these guys any longer lol.

doesn't like Green Lanterns.
That's the issue I think.

Most people that like it probably don't really know much or anything about Green Lanterns.

The series can work, it's got that buddy cop True Detective vibe going and Aaron and Kyle gave great performances. But it does not really work for a Green Lantern series. You expect to see them using the rings, constructs, cool shit and all.

I understand people wanna have their own interpretation and maybe a more realistic approach but buddy I am not watching a superhero show expecting realism and shit. I wanna see cool fights, abilities and these heroes we grew up on doing cool shit. There are grounded superheroes, but GL shouldn't be that. It's an intergalactic cop corps ffs.

It's a shame that the DCU just cannot string a few Ws, cuz I think they are a better comic company than Marvel and got better heroes.

I'm of the opinion that "True Detective style" is pure nonsense, because it doesn't work with Green Lantern. Wanna make of a buddy cop with Green Lantern? Ok. Wanna make a True Detective Green Lantern? Nonsense. It's too grounded and too out of what GL concept is.

They could have made a Question TV show inspired in True Detective, but no, let's be idiot and use literal cosmic heroes because.....why not? Lol

Now, you have larpers on Internet, who literally know shit about what they're talking, glazing this show with the issue this is much better because a comic accurate Green Lantern production would be too goofy and expensive.
