the new MONSTERS OVA has slightly changed Ryuma's design, specifically, they gave him his canonical OP manga counterpart sword Shusui, while its black blade too, despite the older spin off counterpart not having Shusui at the time.

So I have 2 questions:

1-was this change done just to update his design to be more akin to the canon one in OP? if yes, then:

2- how does he already have a black blade at such a young age? I'm assuming this art is of him BEFORE killing the dragon, and he looks to be the same age as Zoro too (19-21)

Monsters was an early release before OP which was also called which the early concept for One Piece was called Romance Dawn.

Ryuma was a concept which Oda incorporated into One Piece as Zoro.

Since Oda is merging his early concept "Monsters" with "One Piece" naturally there will have to be changes, Ryumas sword etc.

I'm NOT surprised it's a black blade but it also makes sense.
In Monsters he's already the strongest so to match his strength at the time his sword would naturally be black, the strongest in the world with the strongest weapon, the only thing is he doesn't realize he's the strongest similarly to Zoro not realizing he's a CoC user.

for ryuma countless battles to become king...strongest haki and maybe his bond with sword? Since i love the topic im gonna go in some :milaugh:. I have always found it interesting that the road to laughtale vol 2 talked about wb naginata having extraordinary durability to channel his full power through it... Black blades are known for hardness and durablity and won't break/bend even if a dinosaur stepped on it. What does this extra durability say for ryuma and also mihawk who need it to channel there full haki through there blades?

Personal opinion i think the forging or a black blade only starts when a swordsman flows adv coc through them that said lets say ryuma after countless battles with lots of coc haki use, his blade can break via his own use, and since each blade has a rank/durability ryuma pushed his blade to the breaking point. We learned in wano each sword has there own personality, so shusui could not have wanted to break and in order to facilitate the extreme haki use that ryuma put on shusui it awakens in a sense and it turns black. As a result forging itself into a permanent black blade because its bond with ryuma is a permanent i guess if you want to say the swordsman and the blade are permanently one.

Going off of the one piece manga we know ryuma has legends about pirates and nobles wanting the land of gold, we know ryuma held them all off making it known that the land of wano was a land of samurai. What if this moment of battle was the creation of the black blade in which he had to go all out to defend wano bringing shusui to it limit and awakening the black blade. Ryuma history of battle is noted to the creation of a black blade. Maybe zoro realizes that lots of fights are necessary maybe even that haki is key but obviously he has no clue coc haki is needed as well?

What if nobles came to wano just like they came to god valley? All those ships would make for a lot of battles for ryuma.

The dragon comes after this since gyukimaru separates the two legends in which it is slain with the black blade, and to note zoro used shusui to slay dragon 13 in punk hazard because its tough.

The nobles liked dragon #13 and named it that, and in ryumas story he slays a western dragon so maybe oda will make it to where, after the nobles failed and ryuma held them off they sent a dragon (maybe real) or a df user dragon to wano and ryuma killed it with his black blade.

Idk lol i love black blade hype and ryuma having it in monsters intrigues the hell out of me.:steef::steef::steef:

I think Monster is a hype tool for the upcoming Ryuma, old Wano flashbacks and black blade.

Hopefully we get some important hints like in film Red where the Gorosei implied Shanks is a noble from the Figarland family which confirmed it later in canon.
