It would make more sense that the squirrel ate the legendary Hammer DF since it reverted back to the squirrel when ''defeated''.
But squirrels don't live that long ? Moot because we have seen weird creatures in One Piece, plus this is Elbaph where Giants live hundreds of years so why not animals as well.

@park_min young We have to stay consistent either both the Owl and Squirrelnir have been living for centuries and ate a Devil Fruit or both are Devil Fruits that were eaten..
So the Owl is actually an Advanced Growing Technological Device from the Void Century that ate the Owl Owl fruit and it instantly Grow books when it enter it's range..

Even if the Squirrel has a longer lifespan because its from Elbaf (like the giants) it still makes no sense that it was around for GENERATIONS OF KINGS and denied all of them from eating the DF...
This means this squirrel lived far longer than a couple centuries, maybe even more than the Void Century,
Just a reminder, but Elbaf's last king Harald lived for 144 years, and thats a just a single king... now imagine generations before him of other kings? And the squirrel outlived all of them? Ridiculous.

There is Zunesha and there is Onimaru who seem to have lived faaaar longer than their irl counterparts so I don't get why it is so surprising that a giant squirrel does too.
And Lassoo (Mr 4's weapon); both examples are way more farfetched than a squirrel eating a fruit lol
Unprecedented or not, it still makes more sense, especially since it goes back to squirrel form when beaten.
