Do you know Luffy has lost at least 1 million times in the series?
And only time Zoro has "Lost" he was carrying Luffys irrelevant burden ass.

Zoro lost against many people, starting by Mihawk himself, but they didn't defeat him. If he died by the hands of an enemy that means he lost the duel, but also that he wasn't defeated; therefore for Zoro defeat isn't about losing a fight but losing your morals regarding a duel. And I think this is important because it's part of the foundations of his character as established in Baratie and what will drive him to the top.
1) Zoro lost to the WSS no 1 in the current verse who's stronger than Shanks, Zoro at that time was rookie level.
2)Zoro was badly fucked up, and was in no shape to fight and still gave Arlong the biggest PTSD.
3)Enel literally destroyed everyone around, defeated Joyboy 3 times and he was rookie level still then also
4)Both Luffy and Zoro were thrown around by Lucci before their power ups
5)Zoro damaged Kuma
saved Sanji by knocking his fragile body out
and saved Luffy and CO
such greatness
6)You expected a broken down Zoro to solo an Admiral, another end-level villain?
The whole SH was fucked by Kizaru
But Zoro's parallel at close to 80 yo made Kizaru sweat, another W
7)Same shit
Zoro was damaged and weakened
but how come steroid prince n joyboy's best attacks did nothing>?
8)Equally clashed against an Admiral post ts and make him fall back

Zoro losing or falling up short a few times over a +1000 chapters is reasonable. Wouldn't make sense if he didn't fail to meet expectations early on so he could make a comeback. I think the promise was always a bit over-the-top and I simply rationalise it as him referring to 1v1 swordsan fights since the goal is largely to be the World's Strongest Swordsman since that's his goal and that's what Luffy, the future Pirate King, expects from him.
Plus aside from Enel and Lucci, most of those weren't too bad. He responded to Fujitora after getting sent in the whole and Kaido was post-hakai. Usually Zoro makes up for it anyways like with defeating King to further his progress to becoming World's Strongest Swordsman in part for Luffy.
