Reading comprehension is hard. It really is. Oda should really be more aware of his audience's mental age and (further) dumb the series down accordingly. More telling, no showing! Chapter 1082 truly seems to have short-circuited some people's brains, with crayon-munching geniuses on Worst Gen and Reddit crying about the true fourth yonko's 'confusing' and 'contradictory' character motivations. Fear not - the prophet of our Lord has returned to set the record straight and outline his much-maligned character in simple terms. Terms that even an average unwashed shonen reader can understand. I'm talking of course about Dracule Mihawk - his motivations, his desires and what chapter 1082 means for his story going forward.

The past

We know next to nothing about Mihawk's past - who his parents are, where he's from and why he became a swordsman in the first place. However, Oda's drawing of Mihawk as a child shows that he didn't lead an easy life and spent his childhood either constantly fighting for his life or honing his skills. Mihawk, along with many other members of the middle generation - Doflamingo, Moria, Crocodile, Shanks and Buggy - attended Roger's execution and became acknowledged as the WSS during the Great Age of Piracy, the era of fiercest competition over One Piece. For various reasons, pretty much every single member of middle gen appears to have flamed out mentally and emotionally and settled into some level of complacency. Croc gave up on his dream of becoming pirate king (as demonstrated by his reaction to Miss Goldenweek's ability), Shanks cuts shady compromises with the Gorosei and appears to have avoided conflict with Big Mom and Kaido and Mihawk became a reclusive loner living in the burnt out remains of a former battlefield. The conclusion? Middle gen needs therapy.

Despite his present laziness, Mihawk's personality seems to have been similar to Zoro's when he was younger. His vivre card indicates that he continuously trained and challenged stronger opponents until he realised that none other than Shanks could match him. At age 19, even younger than Zoro is today, he was already a famous swordsman and at some point, he apparently hunted the marines that even Whitebeard and co fled from. The former Pirate King's spiritual successor duelled with this upstart swordsman from nowheresville and still could not claim supremacy over him as the WSS. Specifically, his vivre card says

剣を業とする全ての者が畏れる"鷹の目"は、かつて刃を交えた"赤髪"を凌ぐ使い手の到来を、未来に見据えている・・・!!
Every swordman fears "Hawk-Eye." He looks forward to the arrival of a swordman who can surpass his rival "Red Hair," with whom he crossed blades in the past.

Whatever young Mihawk was like, he clearly never shied from a challenge. However Shanks losing an arm 12 years ago spelled the end of their rivalry and Mihawk lost his motivation to improve, accepting a cushy government position and cashing paychecks for doing fuck all. Which leads us to the present day.

The present
When we first met Mihawk at Baratie, he came across as jaded, capricious and deeply disillusioned with the stereotypical shonen values of persistence, foolhardy courage and hard work. Zeff speculates and Mihawk himself somewhat confirms that he chased Don Krieg's armada to the East Blue for disturbing his afternoon nap, killing thousands of weaker pirates as a means of killing time. Doflamingo also implies that Mihawk is the warlord least dedicated to the job, calling him the 'most unexpected person' to attend the meeting at Mariejoa. Oda presents Mihawk as a foil to both Shanks and Zoro, both of whom have visible scars and disfigurements. Mihawk openly bares his unscarred chest and agrees that scars on the back are a swordsman's shame. He also tells Zoro that death is preferable to defeat - defeat means the loss of one's dreams and vows, to be crushed on not just a physical but a spiritual and ideological level as well.

Because it's very difficult indeed to follow the plot of a manga written for 15 year olds, some people called it 'contradictory' or strange that Mihawk seemed to take some pleasure in being hunted again by the marines and that he attacked Whitebeard at Marineford. If it wasn't already obvious, Mihawk is trying to fill a void by chasing cheap thrills and observing individuals and events that pique his interest. He attacked Whitebeard only once at Marineford after noticing that something was off, stating that the distance between them (the WG forces) and the WSM 'seemed rather close/small'. Other than that, he spent the remainder of the war playing with Luffy, killing time with fellow moustache connoisseur Vista and knocking bombs into Buggy's face, doing absolutely nothing of worth and emerging from the war completely unscathed. He also quickly became bored of cutting down marines and their battleships, to the point that he was prepared to pick up and bounce from the farm. Everything for Mihawk is a mere sideshow until he can have the duel he wants and die happy. He got what he wanted. He lacks for no material goods or creature comforts. There's nothing left to do but wait.

Mihawk has clearly not tasted defeat in a very, very long time at least. The fact that Zoro becoming strong enough to take his title is the only thing that elicits a passionate response implies that Mihawk has little attachment to life and is preparing to go out in a final blaze of glory, having finally found the one swordsman strong enough to satisfy him by surpassing his former rival. Nothing else seems to motivate him to get off his ass. Not becoming a yonko, finding treasure or building a utopia. Dreams are for other people and Mihawk is just along for the ride.

The navy clearly views Mihawk as a major threat, awarding him a bounty higher than two yonko and Blackbeard at the time despite thinking he was a mere underling to Buggy. However the truth is that Mihawk doesn't seem to want to fight anyone who isn't Zoro and never turned his blade against the WG until they showed up at his door to arrest him. The navy made the single most retarded move by picking a fight with a sleeping dragon and essentially thrusting him back into the throne war by destroying the peace he'd been trying to cultivate. If the marines hadn't annoyed Mihawk by throwing men into the meat grinder against him and his baboon empire, Mihawk would have had zero reason to join Cross Guild and use his and Crocodile's combined brand recognition to keep them off his back. Up until 1082, Crocodile was the sole driving force and vision behind Cross Guild, using the organisation to build an independent military state. CG's bounty system turned marines and civilians against each other while keeping Mihawk in its back pocket as a heavy, the equivalent of a nuclear warhead and Grand Line-shaking force to be unleashed against the government if they invited its wrath. Notice how Croc was always smart enough not to ask Mihawk to fight anyone. He was there as a deterrent and nothing more. Until now.

The future
After meeting Zoro and entrusting him with the task of surpassing him as the world's strongest swordsman, Mihawk's gaze has always been set on the distant future, on the day he can experience their final duel. He has no short or medium term goals and simply does whatever he pleases whenever the fancy strikes. If Buggy hadn't set CG on the path to One Piece, Mihawk would only have had to sit there and look scary as the bouncer of Croc Kingdom. He had a pretty good life.

Like Mihawk, Croc doesn't seem to be dreaming too big either. Sure, he wants to create a military nation, but it's a far cry from the passion and rage he showed towards Whitebeard for becoming weak, or his previous dream of becoming Pirate King. In 1082, Buggy asks Mihawk and Croc what they wanted to be when they were younger. Negative experiences, betrayals and in Croc's case defeats have made them bitter and small-minded, selfishly focused on their own personal and material interests. Whatever you might think of Buggy, he demonstrated great self-awareness in this chapter by realising that he'd held himself back and in doing so, failed to reach his true potential. At this point, Buggy has forced Mihawk and Croc to extend themselves and wish for something more; it's not too late for any of them to begin dreaming again.

If Zoro taught Mihawk the value of investing in the next generation, Buggy will teach Mihawk the value of investing in himself. Somewhere along the way, Mihawk's deep mistrust of others and his disappointment towards Shanks caused him to suffer a kind of self-defeat, resulting in a decade of isolation and unbearable dissatisfaction with life. 1082 can be a turning point for the middle gen trio - a surprisingly poignant and welcome development after the garbage fire that was Wano. I'm looking forward to what the future has in store for the Lord, for the day he makes his triumphant return.

I think the major upcoming development for Mihawk has to be him (and Croc) genuinely wanting to make Buggy Pirate King.

Which will necessitate Buggy actually doing something genuinely impressive at some point. I don’t think that impressive thing will be a feat, I think it’s more likely to be an Usopp-style moment. Buggy will show a moment of great determination to achieve his dream despite his flaws and that will gain Mihaw’s respect.

In Mihawk’s case, that’s actually in character, because it’s the thing that impressed him about Zoro.

Which would be good and necessary, because it means Mihawk will absolutely 100% be giving his all when fighting Zoro. They will both be fighting not just for themselves, but for others.

For Shanks, well, it would depend on when the Buggy moment happens. I don’t think Mihawk has or will ever have a real desire to fight Shanks again for his own gratification. That door has closed.

Post-Buggy moment, firstly, depends if Shanks is still active or not. He might be out of the race to Blackbeard already.

If Shanks is still active, I think it’s a fight that Mihawk would do if it arose. Much the same way as he’d have to fight Blackbeard, or Akainu, or anyone. And it would obviously mean more to Mihawk, because he has history with Shanks. But I don’t think he’ll necessarily chase it or desire it, the way he does with Zoro.

Buggy was truly the best thing that could happen to Mihawk and Crocodile.
A lucky fool to shake them up a bit. I am loving every single panel of Cross Guild.

And did Buggy just imply that there is something more Mihawk wanted in his youth?

Or that was just referring to Crocodile and his other followers...
Is there a secret dream of Mihawk's that he ended up abandoning? @Den_Den_Mushi

2 & 5. Mihawk is a 1 man army. He thinks about himself & only for himself.
His duels with Shanks? To better himself.
His targetting of WB? To see how Whitebeard compares to him.
His training of Zoro? So he might face a challenge later.

If there comes something that interests him, whilst being with Cross Guild, he'll do it first and foremost for himself. Cross Guild & the rest is just secondary.

Anyway Good thread...again 👍🏾

I think that Mihawk will realize that to have the quiet peace he seeks he need to make the WG fall.

This could lead to something kinda interesting with Buggy’s One Piece chase and Zoro’s WSS dream. And could intertwined with Mihawk accepting that there is a life after the sword.

And I always like the idea of Mihawk being the Tian (in Feng Shen Ji) of One Piece, a sleeping dragon that was just waiting for the right motivation.

#13
This was just to put Mihawk in the race for the One piece. It is a perfect excuse to eventually have Zoro fight him somewhere while the SHs are doing something instead if have Mihawk randomly pop up in that island or have Zoro leave the group to go look for Mihawk. It is difficult we will see a Mihawk vs Shanks duel if it is not a flashback (and even a flashback is difficult tbh).

#14
Have you guys ever considered Shanks and Mihawk reclashing? I don’t think we got it back then because the whole concept of Haki and AdCoC wasn’t introduced yet. Same for Marineford.

But now that we got so many more developments in Haki, wouldn’t be too farfetched for Oda to show it

Knowing Oda we would see them face off and the ending of the Chapter would be a Clash between them which leads to a Break Week full of Discussions just to show us in the upcoming Week his "Offscreen Fight Skip Piece Qualities" where we see Mihawk and Shanks drinking Wine and Sake.

Great thread Den.

Like people have said, Buggy will be the spark of Mihawk's and Crocodile's determination to achieve their dream this time.

Mihawk probably wanted to go after the One Piece at some point when he was younger and Crocodile basically lost his dream. Now that Buggy's special clown charisma kicking in, Cross Guild Big Three will have their own character development and growth so they could reach the One Piece with harmony.

It would be cool if Mihawk clashes with Shanks one last time.

Only one thing I am confused about is Mihawk's sort of personality switch. ( Due to Oda's writing incompetency especially post ts ).

Mihawk before CG was chasing Pirate fleets out of boredom and when Marines started to go after the Warlords we got that panel where he says that it's been some time since he felt excited like that.

Right now Mihawk is acting strange. Oda's illogical writing eventually got Mihawk himself.

Now he doesn't want to be bothered all of a sudden? He is not looking forward to fighting people and is annoyed with whole CG setup.

Let's be serious. You have to send at least one Admiral to actually make Mihawk take a serious approach and it's not a given that Admiral will succeed.

You mentioned that maybe Zoro indirectly taught Mihawk a lesson about investing in the next generation and Buggy may potentially teach him about investing in himself.

The key problem here is that Mihawk already invested in the next generation back in Baratie. So this is out of the way. He wants Zoro to overcome firstly Shanks and later him.

Investing in himself. Well, he achieved his dream, he became the World's Strongest Swordsman and eventually went into some sort of half retirement.

Usually a fight is just a fight but I relly hope we do see Mihawk taking on someone before fighting Zoro and not in a off-screen matter.

We need to see Mihawk psychology during the fight and what he thinks about and how he adapts to the pressure.

#17
I disagree with much of it.

First of all is it true that Mihawk has no goal since he already fulfilled his goal. He is WSS. We couldbsay that his only dream now is to be surpassed but as I always says he won't eved fight Zoro again. Mihawk said very clear he just wants peace now and will focus on Crocodile Utopia.

Crocodile the other way has a dream way bigger to be pirate king. People really aren't reading the manga to think being Pirate King is that much of a dream. Oda narratively said that this dream made the Great Pirate Era but in reality the majority of those pirates were just fodders.

Who ever said to dream to be Pirate King? None of the Yonkos other than Luffy had this dream.

WB wanted a family.
Big Mom wanted a country with all races.
Kaido wanted a world of violence.
Teach wants to be King of a real Kingdom not that illusion of Pirate King that rules over no one.
Shanks wants to be a coward.

Not even Roger wanted to be Pirate King. He simply was called that.

Roger just wanted to learn about history. And it was very vague about him complaing of being too early and wanted his son to fulfill his dream. He never said anything like, I want to finish what JoyBoy started or I want to take down WG.

But Crocodile is directly saying that. Taking WG down is much more of a dream than simply going to Laugh Tale or finding a stupid treasure.

If anything Buggy is just a kid, he is a clown anyway, and Crocodile has bigger dreams than him.

Just a bonus, what other pirates ever said to be Pirate King? Anyone from Supernova/Worst Gen? Shichibukai? East Blue? None right?

As we know, every Yonko organization bears the name of the captain...
It is interesting what Oda did with Cross Guild.
At first, we get the impression that it is a union between Crocodile, Buggy and Mihawk.
However, only one of them is actually carrying a Cross on both his chest as well as on his back. :myman:

I think his backstory will be a big one considering he is the only former warlord to remain a complete mystery like Shanks, Dragon, BB and Im. One Piece have shown that characters backstories that were revealed later have more importance to the plot.

No one would have thought Doflamingo and Kuma backstories are tied with WG and the Celestial Dragon which explained why they were revealed late. The same reason why Urouge is the only supernova without a backstory yet because it might have something to do with Sky Island/Maxim/Joyboy.

So, i’m sure Mihawk is the same. Being a second black blade user after Ryuma, in possession of the world’s strongest sword and he was already a big star in Roger’s time so he must be with a strong crew or related to a vampire’ish noble who gave him a Sabo treatment.
