Ether way even if they were just there, they took charge of the defense of MJ not the HK. Akainu also took charge when Kuma showed up not the HK. When Charlos got punched by Luffy Kizaru took charge not the HK. When Saturn needed a body guard it was Kizaru not the HK.
Actually I don’t think the HK were even stated to be a military unit in charge of defending CDs, but punishing them.

In that regard I would more expect the God Knights to attack the different factions in opposition to the WG while the Navy plays defense of Marineford and MJ.

God’s Knights are stated to mediate disputes not act as defense for the CD. Garling when introduced is acting as executioner, not guardian. In the scan you posted, Dragon is talking about how the God’s Knights will be mobilized and their main target will be Sabo
And you are proving my point in the 2nd image, yes they will attack the Revolutionary Army lol, thats the conflict.
There is absolutely zero set up of the RA fighting Marines.
