Examples of this trope in One Piece include the Dance Powder during Alabasta arc, Smoker and Monet's hearts in Punk Hazard arc, Big Mom's Vivre Card during WCI arc, the Minks being effected by the full moon, etc...
But what are the times when this trope didn't happen in the manga ? What elements and items/powers did you think that they would have their importance in the story but which turned out to be unimportant or which weren't used at the moment where they could have been used ?
