Also Kaidou and Acnologia are basically cousins lol
Personally I really like big characters, so Kaidou and Big Mom are some of my favorite designs in all of manga, Oda did a great job designing these kind of characters in my opinion.
In general I'm not a fan of huge, bulky character designs, but Kaido's is fine, especially since he still has his hybrid left.
- Best Yonkou design: Shanks
- Best Admiral design: Sakazuki, but Ryokugyu may take the no1 spot in the future.
- Most of the Shichibukai are just amazing in their own right, especially Mihawk, Boa and Doffy.
- Best Commander design: Ben or Marco
( King and Kata are too edgy for me )
- Calgara's design is beastly!!
Oden is kinda....underwhelming, don't wanna say meh
Why expecting a Western type is baseless? Is it because the dragons in cover stories are eastern ones?
But, the canon dragons who appeared in Punk Hazard are Western ones though.
She looked atrocious in that chase, like a bowling ball with swirly eyes and a slobbering tongue. Even outside of the Great Cake Chase though, her design is nothing special imo, she’s just a giant blob in a polka dot dress.
Big Mom looks like Baba Yaga Big Mom looks like the Red Heart Queen for Alice in Wonderland. Okay we get it, She has a villain apparence.
> Big Mom is Goofy, Cartoonist : I can presuppose that her personality is exagerated. That she don't function like a normal human.
In that she differs from the likes of Akainu, Cold Headed, and Blackbeard which is inhuman yes, his personnality seems like an exaggeration. His recklessness and ability to surmount the Odds is an exaggeration. But he seems far more normal than Big Mom and her Glut
Best Zoan : Page one
CP9 : Jabra and Kalifa
WG : Kid, Law, Hawkins
all Mythical Zoans are cool specially Orochi and Marco's fruits
BM and all of her daughters expect Kata
I expected wano to have a lot of cool samurais and Ninjas but Okiku is the only one with a cool design

The canon dragons who appeared in Punk Hazard are Western like the one from MONSTERS, which at least gives an argument for them not being mythical creatures but extincted that were brought back to life by Vegapunk. A mythical model of such a mundane animal would feel odd, I believe.
Plus how every mythical Zoan are strongly Eastern-based, Kaido's Japanese appearance and connection to Wano, some of his physical traits and the very symbolism of Eastern dragons and how it literally fits how Kaido was introduced.

I see nothing bad with a bowling ball with swirly eyes and slobbering tongue. The giant pink blob in a polka dot dress perfectly represent her sweet theme following the correspondences between taste and visuals and, as I said, her main homies are good details in terms of the rhetorics they likely bring to the overall design. I'm not saying it's the best design in One Piece because it's not, but it certainly isn't one of the worst.
honestly ... all people in one piece story seem equal to me
all have some fun hat
and all are inserting by their look
Oda didn't made some one TOO better than they rest ...
since one piece have THE biggest diversity in terms of characters in history of fictions picking one and call it best is not logical
but designs THAT I LIKE PERSONAL
- Shanks
- Akainu
- Sengoku
- Garp
- Whitebeard
- Ben Beckman
- Kidd
- Enel
- Crocodile
- Katakuri
- Doffy
- Mihawk
- Robin
- Chopper
- Dark King
p.s
again ... Oda didn't showed me a design FAR TOO GOOD
but since he (at least for the males of his story) offered a MASSIVE diversity ANY STORY EVER
and every single individual have their own significant funny hat
(one one piece not a story about over sexy Ninjas or over sexy gods of death)
I would give a 10 ...
cause even his work is not perfect and have problems in women department ... he still riches a new level of achievement in storytelling
Finally a champion looking YC1. His design is pretty good. Although as a member of Beast Pirates, Jack just fits more. With his real black wings and flaming figure, instead of Beast, imo he's better if he belongs to Mythical Creature Pirates.
Honestly, I was kinda disappointed that King just has another ancient zoan power which isn't different than the likes of X-Drake or Page One, especially since King's design is absolutely awesome.
It'd be clearly better if King had a mystical zoan fruit but I guess, Oda decided to make King's race extremely rare and powerful.
honestly if it is any lower then 8.5/10, you are kidding yourself
try to read other long running series with massive cast of character with minor character that looks UNINTERESTING/same-y (looking to you tower of god ).
OP's character has this individual uniqueness that you know instantly what arc did dude appear and what are they doing there, even if you forget the name... want example?
It’s gonna take me all day to read the posts in this thread, so I wanted to make my lone observation before jumping into that:
As much as it annoys me for Oda to introduce a bunch of characters each arc that ultimately have less agency in their own lives/conflicts than Luffy and his comrades, he usually makes each one of them unique enough to be independently intriguing. Aside from the obvious ones (like Kuina/Tashigi), he seems to largely avoid recycling character designs. This would be impressive enough if there were only 50 characters in the series, but he’s given us, fuck, 500? More?
Nearly from the beginning, with Buggy’s circus crew and Gaimon in the box, to the various exotic races in the world (giants, minks, fishmen/mermen, sky people), he takes these concepts and completely makes them his own - I just finished reading Skypiea again, and found myself paying more attention to the random denizens as they scrambled from Enel’s wrath, just noticing the thought he put into each character that shows up for one panel and never again. Better posts than mine have been written about his ludicrous attention to detail, so this is nothing new, but it still blows me away more each time.
Character design is kinda big for me if I’m gonna stick with a series. Bleach was one of my favorites for that exact reason, whereas half the characters in Naruto are practically identical to one another. For One Piece to always make each arc feel like its own story thanks to the people always resembling one another without looking too much like folks on other islands, it’s kept things fresh without sacrificing much in terms of plot. Glad someone created this topic here, because I’ve never really expressed these thoughts before.

I’ll also say this - Kaido would look much cooler as a red dragon (like that picture you posted @Topi Jerami), and King is my favorite of the Calamities by design.
Here are the characters I can think of (after just waking up) whose designs I enjoy the most, in no particular order:
Shanks
Marco
Zoro
Jinbe
Franky
Brook
Vivi (I’m realizing I just like distinctly colored hair) ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Caesar
Pedro
Perospero
Amande
All the Vinsmokes
Urouge
Inazuma
Kidd
Hawkins
Bonney
There are probably more, but y’all don’t need a refresher on half the characters in this series. Having this many examples just illustrates my point above.

Female designs are 90% plain, clones of Nami or Robin. In moments when they're next to each other it's easy to get confused.
One or two arcs of varied and unique female designs doesn't excuse 900 chapters of laziness. Only looks even worse considering it showed that Oda can make unique female designs, but simply doesn't for some reason.
But even with the male designs which are at least more varied, most of them are still just plain ugly. Often little thought going into a design beyond an elementary pun. There are exceptions, but these are rare.
Although there are certainly exceptions, on the whole designs are either stolen from another character, ugly to look at, or are just utterly bare bones with the most basic level of thought gone into it so I don't really like most of them.
This is what I love about this community...even though we’re reading the same series, we are NOT taking the same things from it. Oda’s kinda lacking when it comes to both designing AND writing for women, which stands to reason since he’s, you know, a man; given that particular limitation, he’s still done a good job at various points. Nami and Robin have both had compelling moments/arcs, Vivi has always been a well fleshed out character, and characters like Hancock/Shakky are fine on the periphery. He could do more with them, but he could have done a lot of things differently over the past ~25 years.
