Chapter Discussion FINAL VEREDICT on God Valley Incident

Oda for some reason prefers a panel showing us Marco's dad(lmao) kicking Silver Axe instead showing us what happened to Imu and Saturn :doffytroll:
Saturn probably have teleported back to ship after DR Xebec disobeyed Imu's order, we won't know since Oda didn't show it.

Another thing about Saturn is he seems to have let Kuma go, or Kuma deflected every single attack, or Saturn spare him because he is one of the prized rabbit. No confirmation, we have to keep guessing.

Subjective opinion :

With Xebec becoming my favorite one piece character , GV incident was great for me as his fan.

Objective opinion :

Total garbage .

Whitebeard reputation ruined beyond repair ; Yonkos which were being hyped as supporting Xebec till the end actually left him when he needed them the most . Also they are shown to be dumb as fuck for not recognising something was wrong.

Not to mention some big names like Rayleigh , Gaban , Shiki , Gloriosa , Stussy not doing really anything . Holy knights are total disappointment . Fights too short ( this was at east expected but still not an excuse ) , Imu left just like that .

Oda failed big time considering how much hyped GV was.
Honestly its the reason im disappointed in what he did to the BMP in Wano and Vice Admirals in Egghead (save for Perospero and 2 or 3 VAs that actually did something lol). Id rather he not introduce these characters if he cant give them their 5 minutes of fame.

Bro suggestion up here just dont write in long chain of quotes lol , its pain to read everything .

Maybe i am autistic and slow but please break those messages .
The messages are already broken down into small pieces. The quotes are here to structures the answers. And I'm already limitating myself to three lines maximum. I can't do more dude.

God Valley was a mix of events, but some points I wanted to understand more weren't fully addressed. However, it's still an INSANEly good "small arc."

What I liked: the development of the "D" family's story, Davy's inherited willpower; Dragon and his development; the older Devil Fruit users (John, Ganzui).

What I didn't like: very little explanation about Xebec's family; Roger and Garp didn't have a direct interaction with Xebec, just meaningless fighting; little involvement of more Devil Fruits, which at this point in the manga seems more of a drawback than a benefit, due to Haki being introduced in various absurd ways.

Final: 8/10

It was pretty mid all things considered. I’d give it a 6 or 7 out of 10

Some characters got a lot more than I thought and came out better characters

Some completely surprised me and I like them a lot more than I did previously

Dragon, Kuma, and Kaido are 3 of the biggest winners of God Valley and really this flashback in general. I was never the biggest Kaido guy before but this flashback made me genuinely like him

Rocks has been amazing the entire flashback so I don’t have to speak on him

Garp was cooler than I expected

Roger was alright he didn’t really do anything crazy

Big Mom’s dynamic with Kaido also made me enjoy her character more so there’s that

Rayleigh and Gaban did little to nothing which is unfortunate but I did like Rayleigh and Shakky’s dynamic I thought it was cute

The Holy Knights are all ass but I’ll admit it’s extremely satisfying to see them lose in a way that’s never been seen before in One Piece for me. Like I don’t know what it is but seeing Garling get bodied the way he did actually made me giddy lol

——————

Now that that’s out of the way I have to talk about my personal favorite old gen character who also ranks among my top 5 favorite One Piece characters

Whitebeard

Whitebeard, Whitebeard, Whitebeard where do I begin

Throughout the flashback I loved him and his dynamic with the crew. A mediator who was almost like a chill older brother figure to Kaido

Then we get to God Valley and initially I’d say everything went pretty well. Sure, he ran from Garp but with context it made perfect sense. Then he went on to clash with DR Xebec and singlehandedly brought down a mountain in the process

This was all well and good until the conclusion of the incident. I have no problem with Oda making Kaido or Big Mom braindead, no problem at all

But Whitebeard has always been portrayed as a level headed and intelligent guy. Strategic, emotionally intelligent, wise, everything you could ask for in a man

And instead of coming back to assist his captain who very clearly had something wrong with him he… just left?

It made no sense at all. Sure, Roger and Garp needed the VOAT to figure it out but I’d argue Whitebeard has been established to be the smartest old gen captain/leader. Even if they couldn’t figure it out initially that shouldn’t apply to Whitebeard

That seriously soured Whitebeard’s role in God Valley for me. Like I know Whitebeard always viewed Rocks as a flawed individual and similarly believed that the crew was doomed from the start but like… he clearly didn’t hate the guy

I dunno it just annoyed me
I confess to you that Whitebeard ages like a fine wine in this manga... man, I've always been very naive about Yonkou vs. Admiral discussions, I always turned a blind eye to Whitebeard's power, I fell for those fallacies that he wasn't anything special, but after seeing GD past, I see that Whitebeard was much more than we imagined... he wasn't just a simple brute who wanted to fight, he had a purpose, he was with Xebec out of "loyalty," even though he must have been recruited in a davy back fight, he still cultivated the principles of pirate camaraderie.

So yes, I agree with everything you say, he's fantastic.

Oda 100% did originally plan for Smoothie and co to be involved in the raid, but he decided to scrap them for some reason. I guess he just didn’t feel like drawing a few extra fights?

Jinbe should have fought Smoothie. Both of them get boosted by fighting near water, and Jinbe beating a YC2 who should be of a similar caliber to Queen would make Jinbe’s post-Wano bounty make a lot more sense (him getting his bounty more than doubled just for beating WsW, a 500 mil bounty pirate, makes no sense)

The Kid and Heart Pirates should have fought the rest of the BMPs on board the Chanter. Obviously they would only get a few panels of action, but it would at least show that Kid and Law’s crews aren’t literal fodder.

With Jinbe being occupied by Smoothie, that would free up Brook to get an actual fight, with his opponent being WsW. Obviously Oda can rewrite WsW to not be the strongest of the F6 (excluding Drake) if Brook isn’t supposed to be stronger than Franky and Robin.

Also, Carrot really should’ve been the one to finish off Pero since she’s the one who was the most affected by Pedro’s death (Neko stealing the kill from her is one of Oda’s dumbest decisions in Wano). But if Oda really didn’t want Carrot and Wanda to beat him, he could’ve at least had Chopper be the one to finish off a weakened Pero as payback for the beating he got in WCI

We were shown nothing that the summary of this event--Roja and Garp teaming up against the "dsngerous" Xebec--hadn't already told us. We had already speculated on Xebec getting DR'd. Hell, we even had better theories about how Majin Xebec would die and how IMU would be made to leave GV. Even the island itself suffered a boring fate--just sunk. No secret history, no repurposes, no AW mentions. The entire event was bland. The only two moments of genuine fun were Xebec utterly destroying Garling, and Kaido's childish spamming of his dragon fruit.
No secret history yeah right nobody connected Gid Valley to the previous King of the World.

Devilbat

Just chill and let chill
Somewhere between 7 and 8 out of 10 for me. Half of the mark is thanks to Rocks the GOAT. Yeah, I wish some fights were more fleshed out, I agree Shakky as a "gotta catch them all" plot device is stupid, but I enjoyed this flashback a lot more than entire Wano and second half of Egghead. Hope we'll get some cool moments on Elbaph, and I also am looking forward to Luffy & BB seeing each other again!

Honestly if Yamato actually joined Smoothie would have been the logical fight for her here in a way that doesnt feel contrived. They are both children of Yonko and that could have been a neat dynamic to see.

And yeah I always had things like Chopper fighting an Oni-Drake to cure him and Brook potentially facing another BMP of note.

Idk, no ise in dwelling on it anymore. Eggheads just the next layer of disappointment there since he hyped up those VAs and had them immediately trashed lol

Tbh the Yamato4Nakama train was cooked when Oda made it clear that she was > Zoro and Sanji
