Character Discussion Garp is a vile, immoral piece of shit

Idk why Garp is the one to always get slandered when every marine is as responsible as him, even good-hearted ones like Smoker, Tashigi by working for the WG without directly rebelling.

maybe they rather the current system, as flawed as it is over the chaos of piracy taking over the world.

He could've joined his son from the start. The revolutionary army would've toppled WG long time ago then Garb could lead the Navy after that.

But nope, he stayed working under WG for the next 3 decades. I really want to like him but it's so damn hard.

Garp's definitely not perfect. He cares for his grandsons and likely his son too but he was clearly not a capable parent and good intentions aren't enough to justify leaving them with bandits as they grew up.

Marineford was Garp's responsibilities as a grandfather up against those of his as a Marine. Luffy and Ace chose their paths and Garp was conflicted on what to do in the midst of that war so he expressed this by sitting out for most of the war and stood against Luffy but mad no attempt to physically stop him. He hoped things would turn out alright for his grandsons without him tarnishing his place in the Marines and he paid for it. I don't think he's above criticism but it's not like it's a black and white matter. I didn't appreciate his choice but he's far from the most vile character around.

In a world where 90% of pirates are huge pieces of shit, Garp likely has done way more good than evil

Also letโ€™s not forget Luffy literally assisted in letting out the worst scum of the earth escape impel down. If ya can cheer Luffy on you shouldnโ€™t have any moral qualms with Garp
