In the eyes of a lot of westerners, Muslims don’t have room for nuance belief like Christians do.

We are all well aware that not all people who call themselves muslims follow their religion closely.

It also depends on secondary scripture as well. Which in sunni islam have death as punishment for homosexual activities. And homosexual acts generally are seen as sins.
