Marx has met one of the cruelest fates an intellectual can suffer: his ideas hollowed out and twisted by the very people who march beneath his banner. The Marx who lives in the popular imagination today is a stranger to the man himself, an apparition conjured after the fact, bearing his name but little else. The real Marx walked the earth once, thought and wrote and argued, and has since been quietly erased from the thought of his own age.
