Really, I think the only people in india who care about it are Brahmins and Dalits. Both of whom, I believe, are minorities.
Historically this wasn’t the case.
People only knew what caste you were within your locality. Nothing stopped a Dalit from leaving his town and becoming a Brahmin somewhere else, theoretically.
Now it’s probably a lot more rigid, with caste being comparable to a sort of ethnoreligious group.
Honestly I don’t see what’s wrong with this.
