Within the same nations take England, the set of values was shared.
We have countries like Italy or Germany that have no cohesion because they have been created only in the last 200 years and for centuries had different cultures, but at the same time religion was practically the same, along with the core values.

Calling church the abuser when it was the only institution that preserved Greek and Roman literature is a strange take.
History is history, there are no simple roles in describing 1000 years after a millenary empire fell.
The same way you say the church "abused" we could argue roman abused the whole continent, but they also brought fresh water and roads and laws.
Saying that the contribution of Catholic church is a net negative is for me wrong, but I understand that's a complicated topic.
Just saying that without the church, we would have enough lost aristoteles, plato and the origin of western culture.
